"The closer they got to the source, the more horrible the monsters became. Albeit their weapons still were able to bring them down, but the visage of these new monstrosities in the moonlit fog made many lose their composure as they leapt from the shadows and howled in a terrible broken chorus. However, at least this meant that they were getting closer to the source, or perhaps, it only meant that the inhabitants of the forest were merely transforming more and more as time passed.

The forest itself was like hell during night time, the geography of the area caused it to be in an almost permanent fog and the air to be cold. The forest itself would be unnaturally quiet apart from the occasional guttural howl from somewhere. There were no birds or any other avians as strangely they were completely absent from large swaths of the forest. Identifying the direction of a sound was a skill in on itself more than normal, as the fog and the trees caused sounds to bounce around, camouflaging the direction of the sound. There was only one "main" path through the forest, which split it in half into east and west portions. The eastern portion was quite a bit larger than the western half and that side seemed to be the one from which these afflicted creatures were spawning from. There were many other paths that split from the main one, but these have become overgrown long ago with roots and undergrowth, which left only the main path navigable with carriages.

Some hunters tried hunting in daylight, but the thick rotwood canopy blankets the forest in a permanent dark shadow if one walks a couple rockthrows away from the main path. During daytime the creatures also seem to retreat deeper into the forest, which presents its own issues, especially as many caverns have been found deeper in the forest. Their entrances emitting a constant deep howl, whether from the wind or from something that lies below, nobody has yet to venture in to find out."
