I've always enjoyed these comics about genderbent versions of characters becoming who, in a sense, they were meant to be~
And Erza is a perfect fit for it~

As others have mentioned, "Ezra" is actually a fairly common male name in certain parts of the world. I can only assume that the author of Fairy Tail took the name and swapped some characters to come up with Erza.
