Description The incredible adaptive capabilities of pokemon can be appreciated in the wide variety of ecosystems they inhabit. However, no other example is more extreme than the adaptation of these two creatures to the toxic environments created by pollution originated from mans activities.

Koffing is a floating creature that evolved from sealife that lived near factories. It has a speciallized bladder that absorbs the highly noxious fumes from nearby factories and uses it to float in search of prey and away from predators. If threatened or hunting very elusive prey it will use the gas inside its bladder as a method of propulsion by expelling it from modified gills. This gas expulsion is also very effective at poisoning both predator and prey. This gas, once condensed on a surface, will leave behind a disgusting, corrosive sludge that drives away other creatures (as well as greatly annoying manteinance workers), so it must constantly seek new hunting grounds. Unfortunately, the very gas that allows this creature to survive is quite flammable. If it fails to avoid sparks or open flames, it will explode in a ball of fire. Both this and its poisonous defenses have sadly made it a target for terrorist and criminal organizations that use it ruthlessly.
Interestingly, most Koffing ever seen are female. Male koffing, much smaller, will attach themselves to females, soon becoming little more than parasites that take nutrients from the females blood and constantly fertilize any eggs the female produces. Since their floating bladders become fused, they will often be seen inflating and deflating alternately.

Muk, also a descendant from sealife, adapted itself to an amphibious rather than aerial lifestlye. It takes in contaminated water and transforms it into toxic slime through special glands. It surrounds itself with this toxic slime, so toxic that even the fumes coming from it can poison and incapacitate other creatures. While not a predator (it feeds on the carcasses of already dead pokemon), it is highly territorial and agressive, using its poweful tail to fling slime at intruders. It can even hit with its tail if it runs out of slime, but it usually prefers to rid itself of slime and escape if it percieves the threat as too dangerous to take on. A nocturnal hunter, Muk sleeps during the day by hiding and surrounding itself with slime. It letsthe slime harden, leaving itself in a protective coccoon until nighttime comes again.
Recent attempts to reduce pollution have endangered this creature, making it necessary to create contaminated reserves where it can thrive.
