Description There is something lurking in the streets of Gotham City. Tales are spread about a tall, imposing humanoid creature, jumping on the rooftops and stalking the alleys. Very few have seen it, but as time goes on, fewer still refuse it's increasingly obvious existance. It means no harm to the Everyman, however. On the contrary, the Figure seems to be on the side of the citizens of Gotham, arriving just in the nick of time whenever someone is robbed, attacked or in the middle of a gruesome incident.

If there is someone who should be afraid of Gotham's unofficial protector, it's the criminal element that's been plaguing the City for the better part of the century. Ever since the first sighting, anything from robers and carjackers to mob bosses and drug traffickers would be arrested at dawn, with broken ribs and bruised faces. At least half of them would babble incoherently about a creature of the night jumping from the shadows and attacking. Its speed greater that most athletes, it's strenght, terrifying. Many have shot it, stabbed it or harmed it in various ways, but it somehow keeps getting back up. Because of this, even some of the most hardened criminals learn to fear it's presence, which is felt in many ways. Whether it be the hum of its many vehicles patroling the streets (Or the sky) or the Police Department exploiting its image by lighting a signal into the sky, if criminals don't start out being superstitious and cowardly, they only need to look up to feel shivers down their spine.

The presence of this Bat themed vigilante has been a point of heated argument among many high profile figures: Some, such as Reporter Vicky Vale and Professor Hugo Strange have argued in its favor, as its presence has dramatically decreased common crime. Others, such as Mayor Hamilton Hill and Talk show host Jack Ryder argue against, claiming that vigilantism sets out a bad example for the youth, that it makes the authorities look bad and that, although crimes made by "Common" criminals has indeed gone down, those performed by exceptional individuals has skyrocketed.

Whether its presence is directly related to the rise of so called "Super-criminals", it can't be denied that so many of them began to operate in Gotham in the years following its first appearence. Those include: The giggling mad man known as The Joker, the slippery burglar Catwoman, the mind-taxing Riddler, Cold hearted Mister Freeze, the toxic Poison Ivy and so many more.

In spite of this, most of Gotham's citizens claim they finally feel safe. These include Billionaire/playboy, Bruce Wayne.

Wayne is a bit of a polarizing figure in his own right. Already having to live up to the high standards set by his beloved parents, Bruce hasn't made the best of impressions ever since Thomas and Martha were shot and killed in Crime Alley. He disappeared from the public eye to the point many thought he died, only to resurface several years later as a womanizing, alcoholic young man. His public antics and seeming irresponsability would make him an instantly unlikable figure, if it wasn't for his almost overzelous dedication to charity work and public causes. This seeming contradiction have earned him nicknames that vary from "Gotham's Jester" to "The White Prince of Gotham". Most agree that, at the very least, he's well intentioned.

But regardless of Wayne's intentions and (Highly beneficial, nonetheless) actions, the citizens of Gotham have a clear favourite when it comes to a guardian. Their very own Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight Detective, Batman.
