The Kesser and Sons 'Jackrabbit' Mk1 light star freighter is one of the best known and most reliable light freighters in the solar system.

When the Jackrabbit first became available (in early 2162), it quickly earned a reputation as one of the best ships in its class. The design is cheap, dependable, durable, versatile, and has one of the largest cargo bays of any ship in its class (though it does give up something in the way of creature comforts to achieve this).

The design is highly prized by smugglers and legitimate merchants alike for its high level of modability; the ship is built almost entirely from stock parts, and much of the ship will accept almost any kind of standard modification. Traders and small businessmen routinely refit their Jackrabbits with external cargo tethers, loading cranes and/or enlarged bay doors (for increased cargo load or to expedite loading/unloading), extra fuel tanks (for longer cruises), or larger sensor packages and collector drone launch bays (for prospecting and freelance mining).

Some found that the cargo bay could be easily converted into a decent sized mobile home, either for a large group of people, or enough for a single person or small group to live lavishly.

The less than legal element found the cargo bay adapted itself equally well to hidden compartments, sensor shielding, and even illegal sub-structure weaponry (hidden ' pop-up' guns and missile tubes). A few organized crime syndicates saw the Jackrabbit's cargo bay as a potential piece of cheap mobile real-estate, and began running illegal casinos, black market outlets, brothels and even slave trading posts out of converted Jackrabbits.

Overall, the Jackrabbit heralded a new age for commercial starcraft, and the design was so innovative and versatile that it is still sold (and used) in great number, even today.

Length:
-325ft (92m)

Armament:
-None (illegal modification can eke out up to 4 light turret
mounts; more requires re-wiring the whole ship and upping
the reactor, which is cost restrictive)

Smallcraft/Fighters:
-2 Emergency evacuation launches (escape pods) (room for
up to 8 more with slight modification)

Crew Compliment:
-8 ships company (sections of cargo container can be
sacrificed for living modules, making the effective maximum
crewmember count as high as 70)

Oop, just noticed some name-switching going on. Is it 'Jackrabit' with 1 B or 'Jackrabbit' with 2 B's?

Very nice. The design reminds me of an old strike craft carrier i had once upon a time. Especially the engine block.

But i have to say that nobody names anything with a "Mk1" unless they plan to make a "Mk2", ami riiiiiiight??

I was about to come in noting how your description closely parallels my own Tanaris class, but then i realized that there really isn't much else you could say for a light freighter.

Nice twist with the criminal element, tho. Wasn't expecting that one.

Cool. I do similar things in 2D for my writing; just thought it was interesting to see someone else doing something like that.
