I love the color reflecting on the drapery  I'm practicing with the concept using other colors for shadow/highlight instead of black/gray or white

Ohhh, it's so much fun! I love doing funky things with color Actually read about it before I really saw it/knew what to look for -- there's a novel called Forest Lover, about a Canadian artist, that talks about learning to see the blue in shadows, and how shadows are usually the complement color of the light/the object casting the shadow, which I thought was fascinating

Thanks for taking a look!

The lack of balance give some anti establishment air to this piece. I also like what you can do with a limited palette of colors. Beautiful!

Hm, interesting interpretation.. What do you mean by the lack of balance?

Thanks for the comment and fav

The colors and organization of space in the painting.
I usually enjoy watching works which look different without going all weird and abstract

Ahh. Thank you Though I really can't take credit for that effect on this drawing, my art teacher at the time was the one to direct the composition, heh.

very cool!

though, as ms rich keeps saying, you should have more of a value scale in terms of lights and darks. also, your edges could be crisper, esp. the apples and the pomegranate, although I know w/ pastel it can be difficult. how big is the piece?

LOVE it. That's about all I can say!
You work so well with colours. It's like the drawing has captured the whole day, everything that has happened and is happening around that small frame. Impressive skills.

And if you want me to go on nit-picking mode, I'd look those apples a bit more closely and work some of the edges and weird corners a bit smoother. The other thing would be differentiating the background and the red cloth a bit better: now they're a bit too snuggly on same layer (mostly the bit from the glass to the apple breaking the red cloth's line). But those are just small stuff, the drawing is V a-m-a-z-i-n-g as is!

yeah the cloth is a bit off. I dont have pastels though - they're all at my art teacher's place :/

nothing is ever "just pastel"! Unless it's a box of pastels. Nah really, you rock.

Beautiful. Wow! You are so impressive! How long have you been painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thepurplemonster In reply to BitterGrapes [2008-08-23 16:01:58 +0000 UTC]

not that long, as my art teacher reminds me constantly this was done with pastels, which I did still lifes with (3-4 of them? they're in my gallery somewhere) a couple of years ago. Pastels really aren't a medium I'm comfortable with yet, though - this was more of a lucky hit

KuroReiOokami In reply to thepurplemonster [2008-08-17 02:22:41 +0000 UTC]

ah, cool stuff. Neh, if you didn't put fixate on it yet, try tightening up the "edges" by smudging them. Like, the speckled white areas that the pastel didn't touch, and/or add a bit more pastel to those areas and smudging them. Just to tighten up the piece and make it look even better.

It still looks great C=
