Description The Rapier class racer was developed for the Denebian Grand Prix by OmniCorp to face off against the TriCorp StarLance racer. The Rapier was the first ship to use the new developed planar drive system, which proved far lighter and more efficient that previous propulsion systems, and as such, this vessel was a test bed for this type of drive. The Rapier dominated its class from its first race and left other manufacturers scrambling to come up with a propulsion system to match. It would win every major grand prix over the coming decade and was unchallenged until the StarCorp Vision-R racer appeared on the scene and took the crown from the Rapier. As it aged, the Rapier became less relevant and was eventually retired from the racing circuit. The program was then purchased by the Midori Corporation and the Rapier was revitalized as a sports racer for the wealthy, its sparse interior being replaced with an opulent cabin with a range of creature comforts and safety features for two. It was marketed to the rich industrialists, clergy and politicians in the core systems and became very popular - even with its incredibly high price tag. Its speed and handling characteristics, however, led to the deaths of a number of high profile individuals, prompting Midori to install a speed limiter and auto-pilot into the ship and in the process removing the "edginess" of the ship.

Hey, it's all fun and games until someone plunges into a star at light speed and is vaporized.

Yep, rich kids partying too much and drag racing through an asteroid belt (ending in "vaporizations") or losing control in a turn and punching through the hull of a space station habitat at relativistic speeds ... the potential problems are numerous and possibly devastating. Thanks for the comment, by the way.
