A view from the ancient theater building at Kas (ancient Antiphellos), Turkey. This is one of the rare examples of ancient theaters with its Hellenic plan form still present. In these buildings there would be no stage building. Stage decoration would have been presented on painted wooden panels. Thus here is a theater where ancient plays were really staged. On later Roman theaters, stage building is a important part of the architecture like the one in Aspendos. But these buildings would also be used in bloody Gladiator games, and executions of convicts. The simplicity of ancient theater productions are somewhat lost with their history in bloodshed. Then we have the arenas like Colosseum in Rome, purely erected for purposes of making killing the spectacle.!!!....

The island in the photo is the Island of Kastelloritzo (Megiste, Meis) that belongs to Greece. So this is one other place where Greece and Turkey touch each other with only a few miles of distance.

Kaş veya antik çağın Antiphellos'undaki bu küçük tiyatro, aslında Anadolu'da Hellenik plan geleneğini korumuş nadir örneklerden biri. Bu tiyatrolar at nalı şekline yakın inşa edilirlerdi, ve bunlarda sahne binası bulunmazdı. Sahne süsleme ve dekorları tahta panolar aracılığı ile sunulurdu. Dolayısıyla bu örnek hakkaten de antik çağın tiyatro oyunlarının sergilenmesi için kullanılmış.

Halbuki Roma tiyatrolarında ise sahne binasının kendisi tiyatronun ana elemanlarından biri olur, Aspendos'daki örnek gibi. Bu daha yeni yapılar görkemli olmakla beraber, tiyatro oyunları dışında, gladyatör gösterileri gibi daha kanlı aktiviteler için de kullanılmışlardır. Bir anlamda tiyatro oyununun masumiyetinin, kanlı gösterilerle kaybedildiğini bile düşünebiliriz.

Karşıda Yunanistan'a yani Meis Adası'na dokunacakmış gibi yakın manzarası ile Kaş'daki geleneksel tiyatrodan bir manzara...
