Description
The flag of the German Free Socialist Republic was adopted in February 1920 after a popular referendum was held. It was inspired by the flag of the Weimar Republic. Gold stood for prosperity, red for the blood of the people and black for the dark years that were left behind. The red star symbolized proletarian internationalism. Other than this flag, the old banners of the Weimar Republic and Imperial Germany were also used freely by political movements and private citizens.
