It's in fact a very special object, the crystal reacts to radioactivity, so it acts as a Geiger counter. it helps to avoid highly radioactive areas.
Joke apart, it's a prop from a Danie and Marforno set (I don't remeber exactly which one ...)

How do you get daz to export to octane?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThierryCravatte In reply to Rakceyen [2013-04-02 19:04:52 +0000 UTC]
Easy : you export the whole scene as an OBJ in Daz and then you import it into Octane.

ThierryCravatte In reply to Rakceyen [2013-04-09 14:37:30 +0000 UTC]
The limitation are not realy on Octane's side, but they are related to CUDA (the graphic library Octane is build upon). The number of images (textures) you can use in a project are limited :
- The GTX 500 series cards have a limit of 64 LDR (8 bit) RGBA, 32 LDR (8 bit) greyscale, 2 HDR (16 bit) RGBA and 1 HDR (16 bit) greyscale texturemaps.
- The GTX 600 series cards have a limit of 144 LDR (8 bit) RGBA, 68 LDR (8 bit) greyscale, 10 HDR (16 bit) RGBA and 10 HDR (16 bit) greyscale texturemaps.
LDR (8 bit) RGBA are mainly used for diffuse or color textures and LDR (8 bit) greyscale for bump or alpha textures.
Hope this helps.

So there isnt a poly count limit? Its just the texture maps that are limited.
I have a GT 630M card in my laptop. Ive been looking for a better renderer than daz's 3Delight. I have Lux, but because I have a laptop, lux is not very practical to leave it running for several hours. I looked at Octane for its speed. How does Octane compare to Lux or Iray?

ThierryCravatte In reply to Rakceyen [2013-04-10 19:09:38 +0000 UTC]
Yes, there is a polycount limit but it's just related to the amount of memory of your graphic card.
I'm not a Luxrender or iray user, so I couldn't compare, but after having read a lot on the forums, Octane seems to be significantly faster. But you have to keep in mind that the purpose of those renderers is to produce highly realistic images, so the render times are often longer than what you could expect. It may vary between a few minutes up to twenty hours (for extreme cases), depending on the complexity of the scene and the power of your graphic card.

Does it have preset backgrounds that I can just set objects in? Or do I have to make my own?

I'm not sure I perfectly understand your question.
you can throw any .obj file into octane and render it. I usually compose my scene in Daz Studio then, instead of hitting the 'render' button, I export it as an .obj file then open it with Octane and define the camera angle, the lighting, I tweak the materials. Then Octane renders the image. This is basically my work flow. you can do the same with poser or with every 3D application that can produce a .obj file.
Now there are plugins for many 3D applications (Daz, poser, Max, maya, ...) that allow you to render a scene with octane directly within your application, without the need to export/import.
I hope this answers your question, and, if not, feel free to ask more informations.

When you place a specular or other materials block in the window and select it, it renders a preview. Is the background in that preview window available for my scene? Ive just noticed that some of my smaller scenes are taking up a lot of space for Octane and it gets close to its limits (I think its because I have a couple of other programs open at the same time).
And I like those simple backgrounds, they look better than a simple background I can do.
Do you know if the polygon or texture limits get raised as you use one of the plugins? Does daz help Octane handle the larger scenes?

ThierryCravatte In reply to Rakceyen [2013-04-13 16:49:56 +0000 UTC]
Ah, okay, I understand what you mean ! Unfortunately, I don't think the material preview background is available for anything else than previews. You will have to create your own 'environment' ...
Octane uses almost excusively the graphic card memory (GPU), except at voxelizing time. If you dont have a powerful graphic card of if you are short on GPU memory, you should avoid opening many programs while rendering, because some of them might use GPU memory too ...
I may be wrong, but I got tyhe impression that Daz with the Octane plugin needs more memory than Daz Plus Octane standalone. I've bought the plugin for daz, but I don't use it, I prefer Octane standalone's interface. Plus you can 'pause' the render if you wish to gain responsivity for another program (I have only one graphic card, so my machine becomes a bit 'laggy' when I'm running a render)
I don't think that a plugin will help to handle larger scenes, the polycount is just limited by the GPU memory amount.
From my expercience, the only advantage of a plugin is that you 'skip' the export/import phase and the camera parameters in Octane are the same as in Daz.

Have you tried animations in Octane? I thought Octane did animation, but Ive been looking at a lot of websites so I could have gotten mixed up.
And Environmental effect, does it have anything like fog, smoke, rain, or other camera effects?
I would think there would be a button or switch to make the daz plugin send the scene to Octane. The Luxus plugin has a switch that can send the scene to Lux render and use its interface instead of daz. Hopefully they'll add that to the plugin, I really like the ability to pause, especially since Im on a laptop.
Can it use 2 graphics cards? I have two, and I know one is compatable with that CUDU or whatever. Ill have to check the other.
