Description You hear a lot of things about this city. Some good, some bad. I can testify to both...But I will say the good definitely seems to outweigh the bad! Wonderful experiences to be had in Yellowknife, NT and you need not look hard to find an adventure.

Yet another frame from mine and Karl Johnston's ([link] ) trip to this fun and crazy city - you can see the buildings of city center in the very distant background. You may need a magnifying glass.

if you lived there, you would make enough to afford it.

you tried a lot to bring all the aspects in this image...

if you were able to find a higher ground you would've done some wonders.
good timing with the clouds though!

Aw man...I had limited options to say the least...Tripod height: 8 inches, max. Lost (or misplaced for a while) my mounting plate for my Gitzo so had to compose and everything with this dinky little thing sitting on the ground. Even had to lean the tripod a bit so it could support the weight of my cam without wrapping the legs around something.

Your photos make me so badly want to go explore the North. But since I broke up with the guy in Alberta, I'll need a new reason to head out there

Yeah, and I still need to see those darned mountains. I've been to Alberta 4 times and never seen mountains, how did I manage that?!

Thanks You know...you might be surprised. In season (once we are into june and july) they are AWFUL but out of season (Like this trip...Late Aug) they are pretty unmentionable. If they were bothering me I might have knocked this tiny gorillapod off the huge cliff while swatting them LOL...Certain perfect times of year have dealable temps and not many bugs

Pelicanh In reply to Thomas-Koidhis [2011-11-29 22:45:01 +0000 UTC]

depends on your definition of "not many". Mosquitos fly here to LA from Alaska just to bite me! lol For me - ONE is too many. For some reason, other than my gf, I am the one who gets bitten.

Okay well sometimes they are completely absent. I warn you to never venture to these lands in midsummer tho LOL I feel bad for you man. I'd tell you about being swarmed by literally thousands (when we would sometimes venture into the wrong place at the wrong time...such as a thick marsh in extreme humidity and cool, such as directly after a thunderstorm) but that might just give you nightmares Making a mental note to take creepy pics of swarms for you next summer.

My year and a half stay in Yellowknife was so-so, this was the early '90's.
Our arrival started with a 5 night stay in Hay River in a completely empty 200+ room hotel because the road wasn't frozen over yet. One of our employers ended up hiring a helicopter to fly us, and all of our stuff, in to YK.
I got laid off right away, nice, and couldn't find work. Luckily I had some acquaintances who were setting up an oxygen plant there and gathered up some work. We had over a week of -50c during the first few weeks of setting up the plant, which involved lots of outdoor work. Had to use a Herman Nelson to heat the truck and snowmobile so we could get to work. But needed that occasionally in Whitehorse. Still, it was unexpected for the first few weeks there
Got a job managing Bodyworks Fitness, whew, indoor work, very nice! lol. It was a cool place to work, lots of active people to do things with. But, not much exploring of the area. It would be nice to get up there again and do some proper exploring.

All that said Thomas... I love seeing your shots of the area, which I think you know

So interesting to know you have spent so much time in and around the north...I mean it's my home so it is so easy to relate the experiences when someone knows what it's like up here. I hope you get a chance to make it up too Brother...If you do, let me know maybe we can all get together!

I always like seeing work from the North, I have a favourite gallery just for it! Sure I didn't like living in YK much, but really like seeing the country If I do make it up there again, which is something I've been thinking about lately, I'll make sure I let you know
