Oh ace, this is really nicely done!
Would love to see that brickwork a little more messy! Helps to add a narrative to the building, like the dirty smudge work on the white walls! Really cool.

Thanks! It's already changed in a new version, it's a bit too clean and straight in this one

wow looks very nice, the textures looks good! Works blender better then 3dsmax?

Thosar In reply to Saviroosje [2011-09-16 09:59:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It's a matter of personal preference imo, my experience with 3Dsmax was a long time ago, so I wouldn't know how it is at the moment. But Blender works amazing, but that's because I'm used to it, though I've heard that Blender has a steeper learning curve then 3Dsmax. Don't know if that's true though.

I think the brick texture used here looks too modern, and the bricks might be too small. Also keep in mind that the knowledge of making bricks had only been rediscovered in Europe in the twelfth century (late medieval period), and they remained an unusual sight for most buildings partly due to them becoming very unpopular during the Renaissance (where everything revolved around aesthetics). I suggest you change the lower part of the building to something more fitting.

Thanks for the feedback, been looking at lots of references and I'm seeing so many different styles. But perhaps the title is a bit misleading, maybe "Medieval style house" would have been better and I'm not trying to be 100% accurate, a bit medieval/fantasy mixed.

But thanks, very interesting information!

You're welcome ^^
Maye you could try something that's more based on bigger and irregular stones, such as this: [link]
Of course, pick different stones to match the style and atmosphere more. Just an idea

Thosar In reply to YaVaho155 [2011-07-29 12:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm still looking at different textures, perhaps a bit more cobblestone type would be better. And looking at the textures overall, trying to match them all together

Maybe make the white walls a bit less dirty. There can still be some dirt on it, but I think you overdid it slightly. Also make sure to not use pure white (255,255,255) as a base, since that colour is very unnatural. Break it slightly by making it greyer and add in some colourtones. Again, this should be done very subtly and this texture is pretty okay, so that's just optional.

Thosar In reply to YaVaho155 [2011-08-01 08:19:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the wall texture was just for testing, I've already changed the texture . And the dirt was indeed too much, but once I get to the actual baking I can texture paint better dirt in, thanks for the tips .

try some round shapes to bring something organic in it. looks much too blocky.

Thosar In reply to Max-Marvellous [2011-07-29 08:05:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah once the texturing is all finished I intend to take it into Zbrush and mess it up

Max-Marvellous In reply to Thosar [2011-07-29 12:03:58 +0000 UTC]

when u work with zrush u should think about getting 3dsmax or c4d. its is better with zbrush.

btw but thosem odeling details can be done in a 3D prog too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thosar In reply to Max-Marvellous [2011-07-29 12:20:46 +0000 UTC]

Well modeling wise, Blender does a great job and I really like it. Though 3dsmax has indeed a better pipeline with zbrush, also due it having plugins for it.

But max is quite expensive and Blender is still in development and coming closing to competing with max and maya . For the prize of max, I've bought zbrush and various texturing software. The total I've spend on software is more then max or maya, but in return I have much more options in modeling/texturing then I would have with just max, maya, c4d. And cash is a bit tight .

Yeah I know, I could move around some vertices, but doing it in zbrush is much easier and feels more natural imo.
