the F35 is more complex having an extra clutch system for the lift fan and extra doors. note lift fans are extra drag at supersonic speeds so it has to be shut off in horizontal flight.
while the Harrier is only flying on turbo fans with swivel ducts. these things cant go supersonic
the reason F35 has to be big.

Yeah I used that picture for reference for the F-35's size in my drawing. :3

And yes that clutch can also be burnt out quickly if used abruptly to go from vertical to horizontal.
And it's still smaller than the F-22~!
I still don't know what to think about the F-35.
