D³SCR!PTION

Micael New woke up at 7 o'clock on this morning, alarmed by the radio. Planetary control was requesting report. Micael stumbled into the cockpit cursing himself for not being awake to receive the call. His career as freighter pilot made him a bit lazy and he blamed the rotten jump control console for not waking him up when they entered normal space. When he reached the cockpit he saw that wonderful, window-filling orange glowing planet in front of his ship. The sun just came up on the horizon. Holding one hand in front of the eyes so as to not get blinded he reached for the console to activate the windows uv filter. After giving report to the planetary orbit security he activated auto-pilot to enter the line of ships that were waiting for permission to land. Micael got up from his seat and back into the personal cabin to wake up his wife and daughter. He was very excited and gave a kiss to his wife and daughter and told them that they finally arrived. His wife gave him a warm smile as he headed back into the cockpit to watch the landing procedure and to handle incoming requests. Without interruptions the auto-pilot moved the ship into the atmosphere of the planet. Micael took the ship intern communicator to tell his wife and daughter that they entered the atmosphere now - "please come up here, this is a view you have never seen before" he said. As they were entering the ports authority zone micael began to smile as he first looked over that grand view and then into the stunned faces of the rest of the family. "Welcome to port hope on planet myrana calida... myrana calina... our new home".

TECHN!CAL DETA!LS

first of all thanks to =Cocktales - that texture works wonderful!

the creation of this piece went a little different direction than the usual ways i create my stuff with. a few weeks ago i got myself a gfxtablet and took this piece as a chance to make myself familiar with digital paintings. some elements in this one are painted and combined with my manip techniques. i can say i learned a lot by creating this piece. the work with a pen made it much much easier to work out the building textures or to add freighter and fighters. the part i'm most proud of is the dock in that wall. it's perfectly the direction i want to go with my technique. a mix of manipulations and paintings. that's all i can say. this piece was a lot of work and i hope you can enjoy viewing it as much as i enjoyed creating it.

Well Tigaer, such a worked on piece truly deserves a comment to analyse all the incredible details you put into the piece, & i shall say, i will analyse it. Because really, these are the sort of pieces that deserve it; You spend so much time on it, yet it is nice to know when people notice more hard to notice details you spent so long on. Plus if i can find anything to suggest, im hoping it should help! & in general i say, you did a great job overrall.

Ill start with the first & in my mind the most important thing besides from the visuals; the concept, thoughts & idea's behind the piece. The storyline (I presume it was made by ~crystaleyes909 ) is interesting, reflecting a new hope to go with a new home, perhaps their own planet was destroyed or such, & they had to find a new hope, a new refuge? This was the perfect place. & indeed you have visualised this port of fresh hope well, a warmthing & comforting scene.

Onto the visuals... Ill start from the top down, so lets talk about the sky. I love the cool sort of purple/blue colours mixed with the warmthing yellow/orange/reddish colours, it is nicely mixed, & has a cool & yet comforting effect, However there are things i would suggest to better in this sky; First of all, it is common from the initial terragen render & i know it can be annoying to fix, but there are those compressed like bands all across the sky, seemingly it usually happens when you change colours or saturation in photoshop from the original render, or sometimes is in the render initially, & it is quite a plague. All i can suggest is that you try to smudge or somehow blur it out without it seeming out of place after fixing it. But it is an issue that is hard to ignore in a finished piece. Secondly the sun; It may be what you where going for, but it seems peculiarily over dodged & shaped, like i said it might be the effect you wanted. But to me, it seems, wierd.

But besides from that & even including that, its fine, just trying to give suggestions. So ill focus on the other part of the sky; Yes the planets, & of course the stars. The planetary textures are very well detailed, they really hint at the landformations of the planet(s), also they are very spherical which brings in even more realism. Also the lighting crescent fits quite well & seems to shine amongst its spherical form, a rare thing people do, but you do it very well, so it pronounces the depth of a three dimensional object. I also like the positioning of the planets, aligned & yet nicely varied. I love the stars, they are only the large ones as to pierce the atmosphere, & they are well spaced & have nice variable luminence, well done.

Onto perhaps the most worked on part, the port, Port Hope. Ill start left to right seeing as there is so much detail. But first of all the horizon; I know it is meant to be sort of like a fog perhaps covering the distance, but to me, it feels like the port/city cuts off too soon in the distance, Especially on the left seeing as the fog buildup is not as bright, i feel it should be seen further into the distance to smoothly fade away. Just a suggestion, as it might seem alot more apealing. But onto the true structures. I can tell you have been doing a good job with your new Wacom, it shows, especially with the finer details.

I love all the details on the left building, the strange energetic glows from the exhaust; same goes with that black smoke escaping one (although for that one i really would suggest you can see it is escaping the building somehow; it feels solid, my suggestion would be for in between the gaps, make it seem like clogged metal gaps, so it looks like a building exhaust.), Furthermore the details are incredible, exquisite tiles, & wonderful lighting. The 'Port Hope' logo is also well lit & does not have a fake feeling; it fits in well with the detail while still being a text orientated visual. A feat indeed. Those arches (about where that very well done space ship is on the bottom left just flying away from the left structure) are perhaps my favourite part in this area, they have great lighting, a lovely smooth realistic metal sensitivity to them, & of course are well detailed. Also i cannot ignore the immense POV/Perspective you have worked into this structure, not just with the initial rendering but with the application of the textures also.

Moving on, i think it is well done that you make the texturing less as the buildings go towards the sun; it gives the sense of the bright sun blocking out these features to our eyes, & makes it so we all focus on perhaps what you want us too. I like that, & as a sidenote, i like those blue lights you painted. I adore the space ships; ESPECIALLY the ones to the right just under the sun, that are seemingly in a traffic like view, are they ships or something else? Whatever they are, i love their alignment & sense of movement & traffic.. Even perhaps if that was not what you where aiming for. As not to rave, i think its best to move on to the final point & conclusion.

So, my last thing to point out; You did a great job implementing where to put the text with the name & such, something i was have problems fiddling with. & i am quite a fan of the logo like feel to the 'H)PE' you made, the ')' is so crisp & smooth, perfect typography. Plus setting the text to overlay seems to have worked well. However there is something i will say; I know this was what you where going for, but the crescent that goes throughout the whole right side of the picture to me feels like it cuts the picture off in a way that makes it seem more like a lighting mistake than a implementation of the logo, i know it fits in with design well, but i dont know, it just feels like that to me.

In conclusion; A very well done piece with immense details, Tigaer style! & i am glad you are working with the Wacom better everyday, i can really tell, & i am definitely looking forward to your next piece. On the other side of things; There are always things to improve on, & these things i hoped my suggestions helped with, you grow each day to become a better artist.
Keep up the great work tigaer!

1. the story i mine... crystaleyes just read through it to delete spelling faults...
2. the lines in the sky. hell i know what you mean and trust me i invested two hours to get that stuff away but it doesnt work! it's a very weird issue... neither a simple blur or a smudge did the job. the smudge helped at least a little bit but not enough. normally you would think a large scaled blur could make these lines away but no... they're still there after applying the filter. very weird - experienced it so often now and found no true solution.
3. the sun was rendered that way and i like the look
4. the background yes i could have worked it out a bit more but hell... 7 weeks are enough.
5. yes these lines under the sun are ships... little freighters... fighter... all sorts of stuff. worked out parts of that detail very early because i needed some traffic in that area to make it really look like some sort of port.
6. finally i'm through with reading. lol

thanks for your analysis... - let me tell you that i completely agree with your sight of things. you have a good eye.

once again, thx

1. Ah i see, well you did a good job on the story.
2. I definitely know what you mean there Tigaer, it is indeed quite a plague as i said, & it is strange.. Sometimes smudging & blurring does remove it well, & then sometimes, it dosnt seem to help at all; Which dosnt make much sense really because as you said, such methods should remove jaddedness. I definitely feel for you when you say you spent 2 hours trying to remove it, especially to no avail, but it was a good try.
3. Fair enough, like i said, it may have been the way you wanted it to be.
4. Yeah, well after 7 weeks i would feel pretty much tired on working on a picture to the point that i would just submit it & never want to open the psd(s) again.
5. That is what i thought, i absolutely love them.
6.

Thanks, im glad you say i have a good eye! & im glad i didnt offend you, because overrall, you did to a great job & you spent a tremendous amount of effort on the picture.

No problems!

Cool, I hadn't realized the building basic shapes were made in TG...that's impressive I find myself wanting to see detail in the various background layers, but I don't see it there. If that was a purposeful style choice, then cool (I assume it was, knowing you rarely back off from detail work) The detail that is there looks amazing though, that tablet must be treating you well
