Description I really want to make a 3D Samus, maybe low-poly, and then I've been thinking about Super Metroid, and how you can get the upgrades in any order you see fit (if you are creative...), and they can also be turned on and off, so I wanted the different suit upgrades to reflect visually in her appearance.

The power suit is generally yellow, and slim or more smooth than the fully powered suit. So I started guessing if those bumps the Varia suit adds could be translated to be from the upgrades you get up to and around Varia, so perhaps the Speed Booster adds the extra thigh volume - a running engine if you will. The high jump already change her boots appearance canonically I believe. Gravity Suit is originally just a purple palette swap, but to not conflict I had to keep Varia as something else than a palette swap - so the upgrades gradually add more orange area. Things to tweak there, of course.

I've put some combinations to see, and also made combinations of power suit and gravity suit without the varia to see how that looked (this is normally not possible in the game to my knowledge).

I have also obsessed over making the suit actually fit over a human so the shoulder sockets aren't offset from her body.. it has led to a less imposing silhouette but I've become pretty happy with it.

Inspired by various stuff, from the Metroid mangas to Prime concept art and Super Metroid sprites. I wanted to retain the feminine hint of hip curve from Prime.

edit: roughed out some side views, added, and removed 2 of the variants to make space (power+varia and power+gravity 'no other upgrades'), I hope the modularity still comes across.

This is one of the best diagrams of Samus and her suit I've seen.

I always imagined it a little bulkier on her frame-- only for that real armor must also cushion impact and so padding is important... but then again, who knows about wacky Chozo materials? Maybe it's just cool that way.

Thank you!

Hmm I took a look at the Super Metroid sprites, the Power Suit is actually very slim (around the body and legs, not so much the shoulders of course), where the upgraded suits have more bulk around the body and legs (not just the big shoulders). So that does make sense for adding armour like you say.

Power suit has only 0% damage reduction after all, I guess it's not really armour.

So, one is sleeker, one is meaner looking!

very nice, will be quite useful to have something so extensive as a guide when modelling
