Deep within the chimerical wasteland of the Desert of Yondo lies the Great Fungi Forest, one of the few stable regions of the desert’s constantly shifting landscape. The adventurers have heard of the amazing magical properties that certain mushrooms, molds and mycelium found there can bestow upon those who consume them. One of the members of the party has obtained a guidebook that shows which fungi have special attributes and which are perilous to imbibe. Despite the many hazards of Yondo and the Great Fungi Forest, the rewards seem well worth the risks.

The air of the forest is filled with floating spores that can have grim consequences for the health of outsiders. In order to protect themselves from becoming infected, the explorers must wear breathing apparatuses or full containment suits. Certain magical enchantments can also provide a prophylactic against the dangerous atmosphere. Those that are not protected risk mutation, insanity and death. The inhabitants of the forest have adapted to the effects of the spores and have a natural immunity.

Below are a few of the special fungi that may be found within the forest. It is necessary to eat at least a mouthful in order to manifest their powers. Ingesting large amounts doesn’t guarantee a stronger effect and it could have bizarre and disastrous reactions. Proceed with caution.

1. Conocybe Versipellis (Shapeshift)- Grants the ability to polymorph your body into a variety of forms. The person will gain the natural physical abilities of the creature that they have transformed into but not any supernatural powers. For example, turning into a gorgon will give you poisonous snakes but it won’t confer the ability to turn people to stone.

2. Stropharia Caelestia (Astral Travel)- Grants the ability to leave your physical body and travel into the higher planes of reality. The intermediary realm that is first encountered is known as the Spectral World. From here, any number of outer dimensions may be accessed. All of these domains have their own unique risks and threats. Returning to occupy your physical form is not guaranteed.

3. Gymphilus Mors (Control Undead)- Grants the ability to command various zombies, ghouls, wraiths, mummies, shades and poltergeists. The most powerful fiends such as liches, vampires and specters will likely resist control unless the person attempting to compel them is already an experienced magic user.

4. Psilocybe Psychometria (Psychometry)- Grants the ability to “read” the history of an object by tapping into its information field. Visions will appear in the mind of the reader but often they will be jumbled and chaotic. The further back in time the reader wishes to see, the more vague and hazy the images will be.

5. Pluteus Sosia (Doppelgangers)- Grants the ability to create physical duplicates of the person’s body which they can then mentally control. These replicas contain the memories and personality of the original and need to be absorbed back into them within two hours. Failure to do so can have dire repercussions, as the copies will quickly begin to develop a sense of individual autonomy and may try to replace the original.

6. Panaeolus Solve et Coagula (Matter Transmutation)- Grants the ability to disincorporate physical matter into a fluid state which can then be re-assembled into a new form. The new configuration may be much larger or smaller than the original but it will always contain the same mass. This power should only be used on inorganic material and attempting it on a living creature can create a catastrophic feedback loop.

The beings that live within the Great Fungi Forest are very territorial and hostile to intruders. These include giant insects and arachnids, toadstool gnomes, huge intelligent puffballs, morel hamadryads and the Ergot Leshy. The entire cankerous area is ruled over by an avatar of the goddess Nuit. It would be most fortuitous for the adventurers if they encroached upon the forest while Nuit was visiting another sphere of reality. If she is encountered, you had best be able to make an exceptional bargain with her. Those who incur her wrath will likely become a permanent addition to the forest.
