Description She sighed to the stars as she sat in her favorite perch wishing she hadn't been called upon for the night watch.

Lineart:: [link] by

--EDIT--:: Thanks everyone for the support on this image

LOVED the lineart as soon as I saw it. Didn't realize just how much until I began working flats. It is so much easier for me (*since I can't draw for sh*t) to have incredibly detailed lines to work with. I was able to spend time detailing instead of wondering how to draw a gear?! LOL

Anyways. Yeah, inspiration came from the glass in the most prominent background clock. Totally looked like a crescent moon when I dropped flats.

Critique encouraged. But enjoyment is even more preferable!

Thanks for stopping by!

This is really, incredibly awesome. Great stuff, and I like how smooth and truly metallic everything looks. But, concrit is concrit!

First, I noticed on the face; it's quite detailed, different from most people, and that's good, but it's a bit too much I think; it treads into Uncanny Valley territory and looks a little creepy. Softening it up a little, especially around the nose and cheeks/mouth, might not hurt.

In comparison to the body and face and such, the wings seem underdone and overly simple; adding a bit more detail, or some texture, or a bit more contrast with shadows, might have helped.

Making the smoke plumes transparent was a great idea, I like the idea. But keeping the lineart was, I feel, not so good. You could have erased the lineart and left the lines to be implied by the outline of the smoke. It looks very flat right now, and a little amateur. Smoke and other such atmospheric effects are pretty hard to nail, especially since there are so many different ways to handle it.

I like the little dots of light, they make it seem so much more magical but in a quiet way. The color choices also work out well. I especially like how you chose to color the glass of the clock, and I feel you could have done the same on the class in the lower left.

The left big gear and much of the clock were carefully rendered and detailed with smooth metallic shading, and that really stands out well, but it makes the metal gear of the platform the angel is sitting on flat and dull in comparison. It's from a different angle, so I understand you can't do the same technique for the same level of detail, but there are some other tricks. Consider the reflection of light off flat metallic faces, you can get some strong contrast.

Good luck, I hope this helped,

Thank you very much for you thorough examination of my work It's rare to get helpful criticisms even when I had my subscription and asked for it And all the stuff you mentioned were concerns of mine, so it's nice to know how other people see it too. I would say this is mostly experimental for me since I have never rendered so much metal in all my other images combined . So, looking back I know a few more ways to make the clock tower shes sitting on pop more.

Thanks again for your comment

Sorry for replying late, I'm always slow with messages ^^' .

I'm glad if you found it helpful! I try to give concrit if someone asks, since I know how rare it can be to get it ^^' . I colored this piece too, and I also experimented a lot; I think a piece like this is great for trying out a lot of new stuff =3 . You learn a lot!

Your welcome, and best of luck with future coloring =3 .

Thanks I knew the moment I saw the piece that the background elements could very easily overpower the viewer and detract from the main character, so I tried my best to avoid that happening. For that reason I kept all the gear-work in the same type of metalic material. So, thanks very much for you nice comment

Good and solid work here.
Only nag on the clouds in the bckground.
I would give them some volume and shadows.
I like this pic altough!

TimareeZadel In reply to Voodoodwarf [2011-04-21 18:20:09 +0000 UTC]

I kept them soft and simple to avoid distraction from the overwhelming detail in the mechanisms. Maybe that was the wrong decision? I'll take a look at what I can do. Thanks so much for your comment.

Voodoodwarf In reply to TimareeZadel [2011-04-21 20:14:51 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you should made basic color the clouds a little darker then mashines. So some added shades wuld not so much overwhelm the mechanic details here.
