Description Taken at the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo - Cleveland, OH

This is one of the two meerkats at the Cleveland Zoo hanging out in the new African Elephant Crossing exhibit--this particular viewing area is nice because there are tunnels you can go into that have large panes of glass and then there's a big glass wall you can look through or over to see these cuties.

Meerkats are often found in groups called mobs, clans or gangs and contains about 20 meerkats on average. They are very social animals, with non-breeding females lactating to help feed the the young and all meerkats work as a group to protect the young from threats. They also have a language of vocalizations, with calls and barks having specific meanings to communicate to others in the mob.

Evidently people have looked at these animals and wanted to domesticate them--unfortunately they are pretty smelly as an animal (ferret-like), and they can be very aggressive as well as scent-mark not only their territory, but also their owners. Like all wild animals, they are not suited for domestication and should never be acquired as a pet.

I like to think that he's absorbed in super deep thoughts about something profound...like...are hot dogs really hot and made of dogs?

Agreed with not keeping wild animals as pets... it makes me sad to see wolves, foxes, bears, big cats, alligators, crocodiles and the giant species of tortoise as pets... and meerkats are actually more like mink, polecats, civet cats or wolverines as far as their musk goes... not as bad as skunk, but close... ferrets aren't that bad, especially if they are spayed or neutered...

Nice photo too...

I always joke with my husband that I want a cheetah for our next pet, but the truth is that they belong solely in the wild or in a facility with people trained specifically into their care like a zoo or conservation park. We all want these animals to act like cats and dogs and birds, but their behaviors are so much more complex and evolved from the domestication of their cousins.

And thank you!

I agree there... wild animals have no place as pets, that's why dogs, cats, pet birds, domestic ferrets, aquarium fish, rodents and pasture pals like horses, donkeys, llamas and domestic yaks exist, and why breeds like huskies, mustangs and Bengal or Ocicat cats are popular...

You are very welcome!

It looks like he is thinking hardly about something or maybe worrying. Nice capture of emotions!
