Description Full title: "The Wanderer; Harbinger of Doom".

Oil on canvas. 16"x20".

This was a painting that I was working on when I was going through chemo and radiation for throat cancer back in 2003. I started on it spontaneouly and sometimes the problem with that is, you will notice that it also looks good when viewed after being turned differently and upside down. I worked on it from different angles. That happens often when painting spontaneous organic imagery. Plus, I wasn't feeling well, so my concentration was off.
I had to leave it alone and went on to another painting.

A few years had past and in the meantime, my cancer was gone but then my dad contracted cancer, received treatment, appeared to get better but it came back a year and a half later and he died.

I had pretty much forgotten about the painting but found it in the corner and decided to get back to it eventually. I noticed that looking at it one way, it sort of looked like some kind of creepy figure. I reworked it a little and added the background.

Thank you. Plus I didn't have a lot of energy at the time to paint a larger more detailed painting.

Do you have any idea how great this is? Great choice of colours, and a beautiful title.

Thanks. When I paint spontaneous organic forms they often come to unintentionally resemble some kind of creature or figure of some kind when you look at them a certain way. I look at them from different angles, including upside down.
In this painting, the mass of organic forms seemed to form a being of some kind that seems to be wandering from right to left. 'He' or 'it' also appears to be a bit tortured looking and/or slightly menacing (especially if you are stoned when you look at it). Hence the full title: "The Wanderer; Harbinger of Doom".
Another reason I called it that was because I painted it a year after I recovered from cancer treatment while shortly afterwards my father contracted cancer and died.
I've always been rather ambivalent towards this painting.

Suzh a touching story behind it.
I can see the painting really has a lot of meaning behind it.
I also do abstract and ask my friends what they see in a particular drawing, its good to receive different oppinions.

Nice work, i really like the build up of forms and lovely contrasts in colours! It's got a nice radiance about it, Great Job!

Tolkyes In reply to Mark-Chadwick [2012-10-12 01:06:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. It was rather experimental. I spontaneously painted organic forms with randomly picked colors. Later on I looked at the canvas from different angles and switched it from a vertical to horizontal direction (I've done this before). Then I added the landscape with ruins at the end.
