Description Aurora Plastics Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar with original issue box art. my dad brought me home one just like this from a business trip when i was about 7. i saw this one on Ebay, and i just couldn,t resist! a later issue was done by Aurora in 1972 showing a Boxcar against a rather "blah" light green background, but this issue will always be a fave!

I think my dad has this same kit and also the newer version too. From what I understand this is one of this favourite aircraft.

Well you have the one that was in the new version of Flight of the Phoenix. That one was certainly airworthy.

Oh wow!!! This old kit looks great!! You've done a wonderful job with this great old bird.

My father used to be crew chief on these planes back in the early '70s and he still has a built kit of this on his shelf at home. He also gave one he built for me when I was about the same age as you when your father gave you yours. Mine got broke and lost many, many years ago. Thank you very much for bringing back some very fond memories and I hope you haven't minded me sharing just a bit with you.

You're very welcome! I really like your photo work with the models. Are most of the airliners 1/400 scale diecasts? They look like could be. I do have the Diecast Airbus Beluga heavy lift aircraft and it looks like yours is the same. It also looks like a number of your models are kitbuilds too, but its kind of hard too say for sure which are kitbuilds and which are the diecasts. Great planes and photography though whichever way it goes with these.

my airliners are all either 1/144 or 1/200 with a few other scales, and all handmade by me.....one of my pet-peeves is someone who buys a cheap ready-made and just snaps a pic and posts it,as if it was their own creation! all mine are assembled, seams and joints filled,wet-sanded and surfaces polished prior to priming, and painting, with sometimes rather complex paint schemes and precise decalling involved! fully clear-coated too,to protect the decals, some exotic aftermarket sheets actually cost more than the kit itself!

Thank you for sharing the info about your models. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect towards you. Bravo to you for your integrity! I have seen folks photograph diecasts of various sorts here around DA. I want to believe they were just playing with the camera and to see how well the diecast photographed, but I can't truly say for sure. Your models are so beautifully finished and so clean that it really is kind of hard to tell from the photos for some of them. I have seen some absolutely phenomenal 1/400 scale and smaller diecasts too and I was just trying to be respectful either direction. The other thing that was throwing me off was the vast quantity of models you have built. Which is again fantastic and I say this with the utmost respect for you and your craftsmanship.
The ones that were really throwing doubt into my diecast theory were your Fedex C-17, the HH-65 Dolphin(Trumpeter 1/48 scale kit?), and of course the C-119s. The Beluga also was really tough as I do have the 1/400 scale diecast one and it does look very much like your plane, and I couldn't remember well whether there was an injection molded kit of that plane or not(did Revell put out a 1/144 scale version of this plane?)

I am actually very glad to hear these were all made by you and not just photos of diecasts.Your modeling skills are top notch and I do hope you will forgive me for doubting or not recognizing your skills. Thank you for taking the time with me to correct my error. I do appreciate it.

Yes, I have bought some aftermarket parts and decals myself from time to time and I do agree with you, they sure can get pricey indeed!

OK,glad that,s cleared up! yes,the Beluga is the 1/144 RevellGermany kit. a vast collection for sure,i,ve been doing this sort of thing for a long time now!

Me too. Your collection is amazing. I too have a pretty big collection, but it's of many, many different genres and guess I don't really think about my collection being so large, but I guess it is and over a 35+ year time span a lot of my models have come and gone over the years. It's humbling to see a collection as large as yours on pretty much one subject theme(airliners). Great works and a wonderful collection for sure! I will certainly have too look at your models more and closer. They do deserve admiring.

There isn't a kit for such a common plane?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to concaholic [2008-03-04 09:45:40 +0000 UTC]

Aurora Plastics{long out-of-business} made one back in the early 1960s of an early straight-fin 310,but,it,s a very rare and sky-high priced item. the one i want would be a later shark-fin version, but unfortunately most kit mfgrs. just seem to ignore General Aviation.

concaholic In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-03-04 22:26:37 +0000 UTC]

I kinda noticed that. Its mostly just airliners and military planes

TomCatDriver In reply to concaholic [2008-03-05 15:04:56 +0000 UTC]

very costly to make master molds for a kit,the mfgrs Product Planners have to consider what subjects would be popular and sell enough copies to recoup their investment for tool and die making, and clear a good profit.
