Description Finally got this one finished today, it took me a little while. I was originally going to do this as an ink wash, but thankfully realised before trying this that the paper wouldn't handle it (see my last deviation for how I found that out!). One of my better recent ones I think (hope!).

Hey! This is a wonderful drawing. So alive with the people and traffic and yet detailed. Great!

A fascinating image i got to see....just one question to ask....how you manage your perspective so well?? do you first do pencil sketches or just directly play with ink????

and i absolutely love the shading ....just simple and effective.....
bravo!!

Thank you. I take a rather haphazard approach to perspective; sometimes I draw perspective lines to a vanishing point, but normally I'll rough out the basic layout in pencil to make sure it seems to work and go by eye. This can cause problems when I start inking, but I prefer not to be too formal when drawing.
Most of my India and Japan drawing were done straight in ink, but if something goes wrong you have to find a way to cover it up.

so how do you draw these.
they look so photo realistic!?
do you start from a photo ?

the linework is just amazing.

TomHopkinson In reply to pw1 [2009-08-08 09:13:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're from photos I've taken. As for how I draw them? I rough out the main outlines in pencil (normally), maybe throw in a few perspective lines, then just work in patches inking. Sometimes as here [link] I complete the external linework before starting on the fill, but that's unusual for me. It's mostly down to how the things in the photo translate into lines.

I really like your inking work, it's neat and still has a sort of grunge feeling in it... maybe it's because you don't use any ruler (am I right?) and the lines are a bit warmer...

TomHopkinson In reply to martinacecilia [2009-01-15 16:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I try and avoid rulers, I'll use them to pencil in a really tall lamppost or something, but I'll still draw freehand over that. I try to keep my lines just a little loose - 'warmer' is a nice description.

I find it hard to keep things separated in my drawings but you do a good job.

I think is better this way, the textures and shadows by the lines works enough for me.
