i usually plan out a composition first, and then go through and add the little details, trying to fill it all in till it looks right

You put A LOT of detail into this picture, holy crap! It looks amazing- both the characters and all of the little things going on in the foreground/background/whatever.
I especially like the mouse tugging the brownie away. XD That one is especially cute.
The characters themselves have so much personality in thier faces and in their poses and the kind of clothing they're wearing and etc. I love carefree they seemingly are, but how each of them is also very individual (I especially like the one dressed as the mad hatter- probably because he looks kind of like Pushkin and is showing off and little and is therefore awesome).
The tartan pattern on the other character's pants was VERY well drawn. I fail at drawing tartan patterns.
