Description
I have a very specific and intentional design for Koi fish mermaids and I super love drawing them. They are colorful beautiful fish with so many types of unique patterning. So specifically with my designs of these mermaids, here are a few things to look out for:
- They have very long and whispy tendrils of hair to their sides that trail off like koi whiskers to the sides. In this particular design, it's the two long black pieces of hair.
- They are one of the only fresh water AND domesticated mermaid species.
- There are two types of koi I design; pygmy koi like this one with small dainty features and fit in the palms of your hands, and pond koi which are typically larger in size and have more detailed and humanesque features.
- Koi mermaids love flowers and most always have at least 1 flower in their hair that they grab from the surface of the water or their ponds.
- Typically they also have strands of pearls or flowers that wrap around the back of the head to meet the other flower on the other side of their head or just hang down the side if they have just 1 flower in their hair.
- Kois may also have braided protection necklaces, bracelets, or tail decorations with flowers or prayer tags on them.
- Flowers have also been seen decorating their orb pouches.
- My koi designs also usually have a luminescent orb on their hip held in a hand woven pouch. These orbs protect them and light up the often murky water where they swim.
- My koi mermaids have very very long hair and their tails trail off into fleshy tendrils on the sides.
- The designs on the face are particular
- almost no upper lip, very distinct lower lip
- Pygmy koi have a single line to no line that distinguishes a nose whereas fully grow koi mermaids have a detailed nose
- They almost always have a pale face with either no spots, a mask or a single spot. This design sometimes reflects the Geishas of Japan.
- Pygmy koi mermaids, in these designs, have 2 ventral fins on their mermaid tail. Fully grown koi mermaids have 2 pectoral fins and 2 ventral fins on their tail. There are some unique koi mermaids that have pectral, vental, and anal fins but VERY rarely do koi mermaids also have a dorsal fin (though, still, it is not impossible).
This drawing was done on and 8.5 x 11 sheet of Bristol paper, inked with Fabercastell size .002 ink pen and colored with Copic markers.
