Description Tobi Sammet‘s first two Avantasia albums were 1) my gateway drug into any kind of metal and 2) I always liked the story. Yes I know Tobi much prefers the newer Avantasia albums, especially because the „The Metal opera“ story is basically a cheesy fantasy story. Well, yes, it is. But I always thought it has potential. Plus, only telling it in music and a few notes makes it much less cheesy and much more awesome… It just has a very special place in my heart. Practically right next to Tolkien‘s Silmarillion for that matter.

So I tried to make a cheesy, epic, pseudo-movie posterish hero-portrait illustration again and again and again…

You can see the main process of these attempts here, together with a lot of musing on music, and on art (hey, I tried to keep it brief):

And now – here‘s my 2013 version. …I‘m afraid it won‘t be the last one. Yes I know the composition and non-existant focus of interest are still crap, but I think I don‘t care… much.
Music suggestion should be obvious this time. Uh no let‘s take the live version, because all the songs happen to be 300 additional percent better than the studio version (except Twisted Mind, I miss Khan‘s voice there):

Personal highlights: The Scarecrow, „Aber ich mach das jetz!“, the Sign of the Cross/The Seven Angels Medley. And actually these two shows make me even more giggly and excited for the one I‘ve got a ticket for!

Uh yes and because I love Renaissance clothes so much, have some design doodles to go with it:

(er yes I have a tumblr account *waves a promotional flag*)

Watercolour and some acrylics. …Is there anything else for you to know, after all these remarks?

Pffft, there are TONS of metal albums with cheesy stories.  It doesn't matter if they are cheesy, though, if the music is epic.

My gateway drug was Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian... but I totally have the Metal Opera, too.

I… I love the cheesy The Metal Opera story. To bits.

I don’t know, I knew Blind Guardian long before Avantasia, but I didn’t like them that much. Even nowadays I'm not much of a Blind Guardian fan. There are some songs which I think are amazing, but overall, nope. I'm weird, I know :/.

Blood Tears and When Time Stands Still are bloody awesome, though.

With Blind Guardian, it's mostly that one album that I love.  But there's lots and lots of great metal out there.  I tend to go for the more symphonic stuff, like Therion.  The song "Farewell" from the Metal Opera was definitely on repeat on my computer for a while.  XD  I love that song.

The storyline for The Dark Secret by Rhapsody was pretty damn cheesy.  As for the Metal Opera, your pictures make it way better.    All metal albums should come illustrated, lol.

Therion are great .

Rhapsody… oh I don't know, usually they’re too cheesy for me even if I pretend I didn’t understand the lyrics. Some songs are nice, yeah, but I definitely have to be in an extra-cheesy mood to enjoy them…

Seriously, you don't mention a million times in your booklet how epic and tragic your story is!

…Which is NOT what Tobi is doing in his Avantasia stories. That alone makes them more awesome. And I still think the Metal Opera isn’t as cheesy as he says . Sure it has cheesy elements (prophecies, other world, save that other world, led-astray-clerics, the wise bearded mentor, etc etc), but it also has a refreshing protagonist, a really cool historical setting and cool stuff like witches and cynical talking trees. I like it. And that’s it. It just lacks a proper ending.

Nooooo farewelll could beee the laaaaaaaast one~~~

I'm trying to think what my favorite albums are.  Into the Electric Castle, by Ayreon, is up near the top, and that has a silly storyline - an alien has brought people from different times and places to the "electric castle" to study their emotions.  But I like the music so much I don't mind.  I have a pretty high tolerance for cheese, lol.  There's another band with some of the same people, Star One, that does songs about sci-fi movies, which is pretty entertaining.  And this Scottish group, Alestorm, whose songs are all about pirates - I love them.  I have lots of Nightwish, I confess, and some Epica, and a lot of stuff that's sort of semi-metal, like Uriah Heep.  I JUST LIKE EVERYTHING.  I dabble.

I didn't realise just how silly The Dark Secret's story was until I looked it up.  XD  I confess I never looked up the story for The Metal Opera, because I thought I was able to get most of it from the music, but of course you never get as much from just the lyrics as you do when you put them in context.

I quite enjoyed the story of the Human Equation, but never got to listen to the other Ayreon albums, it’s somewhere near the top of a long "damn listen to those albums" list.

And there’s nothing to confess about the bands you mentioned D:

The Metal Opera story works a bit like your average Luca Turilli/Rhapsody-Story insofar that a lot of it is not told in music. Difference is that the Avantasia is so much better and also so much better WRITTEN. It's not a grand piece of literature, it’s just a summary with your occasional mistake , but I enjoyed it as a backup for the lyrics of the songs. Which I like. For the most part.

I don't know why Regrin’s part in Sign of the Cross is always left out during live perfomances. Probably because it is shittily cheesy but hey who cares?

Was ich ja eher schade finde.

Wow, love the colouring! The folds on the monk in front look great. Though I have to say he looks very thin for that round face of his.
