I… I love the cheesy The Metal Opera story. To bits.
I don’t know, I knew Blind Guardian long before Avantasia, but I didn’t like them that much. Even nowadays I'm not much of a Blind Guardian fan. There are some songs which I think are amazing, but overall, nope. I'm weird, I know :/.
Blood Tears and When Time Stands Still are bloody awesome, though.

Therion are great .
Rhapsody… oh I don't know, usually they’re too cheesy for me even if I pretend I didn’t understand the lyrics. Some songs are nice, yeah, but I definitely have to be in an extra-cheesy mood to enjoy them…
Seriously, you don't mention a million times in your booklet how epic and tragic your story is!
…Which is NOT what Tobi is doing in his Avantasia stories. That alone makes them more awesome. And I still think the Metal Opera isn’t as cheesy as he says . Sure it has cheesy elements (prophecies, other world, save that other world, led-astray-clerics, the wise bearded mentor, etc etc), but it also has a refreshing protagonist, a really cool historical setting and cool stuff like witches and cynical talking trees. I like it. And that’s it. It just lacks a proper ending.
Nooooo farewelll could beee the laaaaaaaast one~~~

I'm trying to think what my favorite albums are. Into the Electric Castle, by Ayreon, is up near the top, and that has a silly storyline - an alien has brought people from different times and places to the "electric castle" to study their emotions. But I like the music so much I don't mind. I have a pretty high tolerance for cheese, lol. There's another band with some of the same people, Star One, that does songs about sci-fi movies, which is pretty entertaining. And this Scottish group, Alestorm, whose songs are all about pirates - I love them. I have lots of Nightwish, I confess, and some Epica, and a lot of stuff that's sort of semi-metal, like Uriah Heep. I JUST LIKE EVERYTHING. I dabble.
I didn't realise just how silly The Dark Secret's story was until I looked it up. XD I confess I never looked up the story for The Metal Opera, because I thought I was able to get most of it from the music, but of course you never get as much from just the lyrics as you do when you put them in context.

I quite enjoyed the story of the Human Equation, but never got to listen to the other Ayreon albums, it’s somewhere near the top of a long "damn listen to those albums" list.
And there’s nothing to confess about the bands you mentioned D:
The Metal Opera story works a bit like your average Luca Turilli/Rhapsody-Story insofar that a lot of it is not told in music. Difference is that the Avantasia is so much better and also so much better WRITTEN. It's not a grand piece of literature, it’s just a summary with your occasional mistake , but I enjoyed it as a backup for the lyrics of the songs. Which I like. For the most part.
I don't know why Regrin’s part in Sign of the Cross is always left out during live perfomances. Probably because it is shittily cheesy but hey who cares?

Das ganz dunkle, ist das wieder die Acrylfarbe? Und... diese eine hervorgehibene Stelle an der Kutte vom Mönch?
