Yes, this was the scene where I cried. As soon as those random flashbacks appeared and churchbells started ringing, I had a bad feeling.
Then L smiled and sort of "gave in" to Light (that foot-washing scene was too symbolic....), and I knew he was going to die.
OMG i cried so much when L died. It was so not fair!!! xDDD I stopped watching DN for a month afterwards.

Did you know that L's symbol is actually from a font called Old English?

In book seven, Light sets up the situation where Misa will die if L finds out she's the 2nd Kira right after she was released by L and since Rem the shinigami didn't want Misa to die, Rem kills L because he would have killed Misa. In this process Rem dies because she protected Misa from death. So. Yea, Rem killed L to protect Misa.
