------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One thousand, three hundred four

One thousand, three hundred five

One thousand, three hundred...

How many steps was that? He was starting to loose count. One hoof after the next, the same repeating pattern. Day after day, mile after mile, changing scenery, but the same aching feeling in his canon bones. After years of staying within the same bachelor herd, Sabre had grown tired of their antics. Sparing, fighting for dominance, putting on a fake show for passing loner mares. He was sick of it. He had been part of that herd for far to long, he had decided, and figured he would never have a harem of his own if he kept it up. So one day he finally decided to go out on his own.

And he started regretting it pretty quickly. Despite that, he kept going.

Sabre looked up at the morning sky, his amber eyes squinting at the sunlight which peaked over the horizon. Despite the different landscapes that he crossed every day, the sky was always the same. It seemed to follow him every day, the sun seemingly taunting him in the morning. At this thought, he glared at the said bright light and grunted. Giving his mane a light shake, he trudged on through the grass. Due to last night's rain, the earth had become soft beneath his hooves, somewhat soothing his sore feet. The dew grazed his legs as they brushed through the grass. Sabre's eyes remained glued to the ground, watching as his hooves passed in and out of his vision. The grass looked tempting, but he had already gorged the night before after the fresh rain. After a few minutes of staring his eyes started to close. There was a pause in his step, and he considered taking a breather.

It was then that his nostrils flared, taking in a sharp scent. It was new, and accompanied by a noise. Ears erect, eyes wide, neck muscles straining, Sabre went from calm and drowsy to alert and tense in lest then a second.

Bark! Bark bark!

What was that? Sabre did not recognize that sound. Whatever it was, it was getting louder and closer. Suddenly, four shapes started to take place in the distance. They were blurred, but small. Definitely smaller then him.

Wait... these are...

He started putting the pieces together, and he realized what those creatures were.

They are...!

Sabre backed up and tensed his hind legs, ready to whip around and dash away at any minute. He reached one leg behind him, but before he could put his foot down he felt a sharp pain. Eyes widening, he let out a shrill whinny and whipped around.

Dogs!!

His suspicions were confirmed by the filthy four-legged mutt below him. Blood trickled from the canine's jaws, and malice gleamed in its eyes. Sabre could feel the warm blood fall down his leg from the fresh bite-mark. He curled up his lip in disgust- this mongrel thought it could possibly take him on? Hopping back on three legs, he lowered his head and snapped his jaws together, and scuffed the ground with his front hoof. The dog suddenly looked fearful. It no longer looked confident, and it backed up. Sabre couldn't help but smirk, and charged forward. He struck one foot down upon the dog's head, hitting it with a sickening thud. The dog's eyes rolled back into its head, and it quickly collapsed. Sabre scoffed and turned back around. The barking had started up again, and the three other dogs had made their way over. Sabre could see their glances flicker from their fallen comrade, back to him. Then they started growling. Unlike the first dog, these two practically smelled like rage. He could smell it wafting off of their pelts. Their eyes gleamed with anger. They were ready to kill.

Sabre's confidence wavered, but he stood his ground nonetheless. At the same time the dogs ran forward, he did as well. He stomped on the larger one's tail, and it let out a yelp that reverberated in his ears. The other bit at his shoulder, but the teeth barely grazed him. Sabre tossed his head, neighing and stomped the ground with his two front hooves. With each stomp the dogs flinched, and promptly turned tail and ran. Sabre charged after them a few strides for good measure, and slowed down to a walk once they were a decidedly safe distance away. Nodding his head, he let out a loud snort. With the dogs finally out of sight, Sabre craned his neck around to look at his leg. The small streams of blood had stained his fur. He snorted, feeling his breath sting the cut. He could see clearly where the dog's teeth started to cut, then scrap downward along his canon bone. Grunting, he grimaced. That was close, if the dog had bitten any farther down it would have cut bone. Sabre raised his head, scanning the grassy field for somewhere to stop and rest. This was gonna be longer of a journey then he had thought.

------------------------

Sabre has officially begun his journey! After chancing a fight with an encounter of hostile dogs, he made it out with only a small wound. At least his ego certainly isn't bruised...
I'm not happy with the background at all, but I just wanted to get this DONE and over with. It's been a long time since I've written, and I got lazy towards the end, sorry!
//I can't wait till he gets a herd of his own EEEEEE~~~
