Paloma Machado, who would eventually come to be known as the feared wrestler “Dama Correnteza,” was born in a poor neighborhood of São Gonçalo in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To keep out of the streets, Paloma’s parents encouraged her and her siblings to take up a sport. Paloma needed no convincing, her hatred of street life ran deep. Paloma had dreams too big for a favela and even at a young age, she knew she would need to work hard to achieve them. She craved fame and fortune, to make her name known across the world, to escape poverty and live a wealthy life, and she wasn’t picky about how this might be achieved.
One day, a few older girls beat and robbed her on her way home from school. When Paloma got home, she saw something on her father’s tiny, old television that she’d never seen before: two fit women, dressed in glittery leotards, battling one another in a ring. One of the women eventually caught her opponent in a heel hook and forced the other lady to tap out. Something clicked. The lights, the pageantry, the glamor, the athleticism, the fighting. Paloma’s decision was made right there.
The next day, Paloma took up judo at a local dojo that let children from her neighborhood practice for free in order to keep them away from drugs and gangs. Paloma dedicated herself to judo for years, competing in tournaments as the years went on, until eventually she decided to take up Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well. With her life dedicated to martial arts, Paloma did nothing but judo and BJJ until she was 18 years old. Immediately upon her eighteenth birthday, she contacted a pro wrestling organization in the United States and signed a contract with them.
Taking her meager earnings from BJJ and judo tournaments, Paloma set off to the USA to pursue her dreams. Taking the ring name “Dama Correnteza,” she began her wrestling journey with the intention of drowning her opponents in smothering squeezes. Paloma has since gone undefeated in the pro wrestling world, racking up championship belts in multiple organizations. Few women can last more than five minutes in the ring with Dama Correnteza before getting choked out and those that do often tap within the next five minutes anyways.
Dama Correnteza is determined to let no one stand in her way.
