i can totaly understand and very much feel with you!
me myself just finished a commissioned portrait of a coupe (the woman is my long-years-friend) and i just learned to curse while doing it!!! so for me the conclusion is, that i deffinetely DONT like painting portraits on demand...! and without knowing the person itself (saw the man only once) it is extremly hard for me to get the special feeling back on canvas you get by watching the photo!

I'm getting better at portraits on demand. My work could be a lot better, but I'm still learning!! The mother loved this, the father didn't say much though. But theyre buying my interpretation of them, not a photograph.

yes, exactly
my friend, she did like my work and his reaction i didnt see. it was a present of her to him - and it was a barter trade. i just couldnt put a price on it... how do you price your work???

Pricing, that's tricky. For this one in particular I also bartered, so I didn't really have a set price. But for my portraits I've got a bit of a system. $30 for a sketch on A4. This may take me up to one hour max. Then if they want it framed, I add a little more. But if they want an oil painting on canvas, I say closer to $200. For this one I may say around $400 or so. I do think about my time spent on it and calculate from that, but if I want to do it that way I'm earning about $10 an hour!!

yeah, at the end i would end up with less that 5,-/h just cus i am not used to do portraits and sometimes i loose a lot of time editing... so my conclusion is, i dont wonna do portraits for sale - thats it!!!
but your price is really reasonable

You just have to find that balance between something you really enjoy and money and say no to things you don't want to do. I'm actually getting to the point where I can turn down commissions or simply say "It will have to wait", and not feel guilty about it. Its good.

thats a very good point to reach. but as i read on your profile, you are doing art for living, arent you???
i still consider painting as my spare-time-pleasure... dont have the faith to consider painting as sth i can make a living from... hope this thoughts of mine will change some day cus everything starts and ends with our thoughts - and that i believe...

Well I am 'making a living' from art. But then I think I couldn't live without art. Art is living.
I can't actually keep a job, because I have an unpredictable illness. But that allows me to work in the time that suits me. I'm not a people person, so working solitary suits me.
I do have employment doing small art classes each week, and I travel around every weekend selling prints of my work and doing portraits at markets. There isn't much money in it, but if I make a big sale every now and then, I'm set!
People say I work so hard, but I don't! It may take me a long time to complete one painting, and it may not sell. But then I might doing something rather quick and sell it instantly. Stress is such a killer, so don't pressure yourself.

so your illness has a very good inpact on your live - maybe thats sounds ill but at least it keeps you going straight for art... and thats one good thing i would see in your situation (dont mean to sound sarcastic cus i really believe that things happen to us always are useful in some way and at the end make sense...)

and a big problem for me would be selling - i do love my own art so much that i cannot imagine to 'have to' sell it and much less if the price is low/considerable for the mainstream!!! but maybe time changes my view on that point but at the moment i just am not prepared to give them away... (again, sounds a bit crazy but i fall in love with my art so much that i could only give a piece away to somebody who loves it more than i allready do and that doesnt happen that often hahahahaaaaa)

i whish you the very best on your way and hope we stay in contact   with a watch f.i.
