Description I've been trying to improve my drawing skills lately and have been drawing a LOT more than usual. For the past few years I've focused mainly on improving my coloring and inking skills, and sadly my drawing has been seriously neglected (I've been doing next to no drawing aside from a rare drawing commission here and there). After a conversation with `ToolKitten on her live stream I decide to try and improve my drawing skills. She mentioned how improving my drawing skills will help me become a better colorist. I never thought of it that way but she's probably right. I've been studying some drawing books by Andrew Loomis, studying some of my favorite pencilers, and have been practicing drawing.

This is by far the best image I've ever drawn, it also took me the longest to draw than anything I've ever drawn. lol I'm really proud of this. It's is the first thing I've drawn in years that I'm not at least partially ashamed off how bad it is. hahah

It's extremely satisfying to finish a drawing and look at it and be like, hey, that's not bad! lol I totally have not experience that before! It's like a drug and now I want to draw some more! lol But I should probably go to bed. I've been up waaaaaay too long.

Thanks for looking!

You may color this if you'd like, as long as you: 1) Give me proper credit (that means crediting me by name as well as providing a link to my DeviantArt page), and 2) Do not make prints of it. The rules are simple and easy to follow, so please respect them.

*Edit - I fixed her front leg as it had some anatomy issues and fixed some of her hair that didn't really flow right.*

lol It's line art. It's not really meant to be inked. Thank you though, it's nice of you to offer.

Your drawing looks 99.9% perfect.

And that other 0.1% I either can't see or you can fix it when you color with 100% perfection

You didn't just like digitally trace your reference right? Because the line art here is so clean and her anatomy is spot on! Great improvement in like less than a week!

hahah Thank you. Though I definitely have some anatomy issues. That front leg especially. I went back in and redrew much of the leg. Hopefully it looks better now. Thank you for the feedback! It's much appreciated.

I started coloring because I thought it would be easy but I found out pretty quick you need to be a good artist in general to do any sort of detailed coloring.

You should work in value too. Don't just work on line-art. Try speed painting in value.

It looks very good

TracyWong In reply to coreyh2 [2013-12-22 11:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Colorists are definitely artists.

I don't think you HAVE to be good at drawing to be a good colorist, I know a couple of good colorists that can't draw for crap. lol But it can probably help make you a better one.

I don't like doing pencil work in value. I prefer to draw in line art form.

coreyh2 In reply to TracyWong [2013-12-22 17:22:54 +0000 UTC]

The part that I worry about is all the forms on the human body that you have to be good at "drawing". If I ever wanted to do a good job coloring a muscular man or woman I have a lot of practice to do. Then after that you'd have to be good at dealing with whatever style is in the line-work. Its scary to me.

Thats what I was thinking about when I commented about the value stuff. Sorry if it was annoying. I like line art too.

you did a good job.

never thought it could improve you as a colorist, but i guess since i technically draw every day anyways it's somewhat a moot point.
and nice pose. i like quite well.

Thank you, Danny! If you have any tips on improving my drawing skills, I'd love to hear it. I'm doing quite a bit of studying and practicing, but can use any advice I can get. Particularly from someone who draws as well as you do.

Danny-Cruz In reply to TracyWong [2013-12-23 14:39:00 +0000 UTC]

hey stacy. just keep doing it

and try to draw from the human figure as much as possible (pics, etc) and avoid comic stylizations at first.

good luck!

TracyWong In reply to Danny-Cruz [2013-12-24 16:04:47 +0000 UTC]

Sound advice! Thank you, Danny! It's hard to avoid stylizations, but I'll try! heheh And I'm definitely going to be using reference images until I get anatomy down better.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.
