BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2000
When PROWL's avatar first saw the light of day, it was complete with oversized optics, the usual 32x32-pixel-induced truncated features, and a much-too-bright colour scheme. He was actually not the most difficult character I worked on in those days, but definitely more than a medium-sized test of my skills. I quite enjoyed seeing how each new version seemed to tighten up his features -- and each new take was completed in a fairly short amount of time. Initially, he was partially based on his TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE image, which, though not inaccurate per se, I did not feel captured the best of his appearances on the TV series. Amusingly (to me, anyway) and completely unplanned is the fact that during this period, every preserved update I performed happened in the month of June.
SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011
For some reason or other, I found him more troublesome to capture well during this phase. I had begun using proper screen shots by then, but among other things I kept making his face too narrow and somehow I could not seem to arrive at an appropriate shade of white for his colour scheme. Although I began the second wave for real in March of 2009, a little preliminary work on PROWL was done the previous month, which I ultimately abandoned -- but not before deciding it was time to cast off my previous format inhibitions entirely and rather than vice versa have the format serve the character. It still took two versions over the course of the year to reasonably match his cartoon appearance. When 2011 came along, I changed very few of his details, at first thinking that he would be large enough as-is, but eventually, because I found that OPTIMUS PRIME was too small in comparison to MEGATRON and needed more work, several others, including PROWL, were subjected to further size and detail adjustments.
