Description 4 hours, mouse, Paint Shop Pro. A photograph of Julian Patton was referenced for the basic form but the lighting is entirely different.

Corey Cain (CC) is one of the few characters of mine I have drawn realistically. My older watchers will remember him from several years ago, back when his hair was bright yellow and his huge anime eyes were intense chocolate brown, but now he's more... well... realistic :3

CC is a noble (the title is a noun, not an adjective) who lives in Duracia, in Phedailin. Yeah, remember that bigass pearly white palace in my gallery? He lives in the same city.

Technically, I'm not content with this painting -- as usual -- but also as per normal I am submitting it and announcing its completion, regardless. If I can find enjoyment in viewing it at this point, why continue to render it to no certain end? Enjoy!

I have noticed that your work here on DA is not legally copyrighted, so I thought to mention it just in case you were not aware of it. Your signature in the work above is fine, except it is missing the required date. Ideally your tradename/trademark should be registered. The copyright symbol and date shown underneath the art, in gray, is a copyright notice only, and does not legally copyright the artwork itself.

Under International Copyright Convention, your Copyright Signature MUST be placed ON the copy of the image being posted to the internet (not the original). Your Copyright Signature must contain 3 elements (shown below), which can be in any order (spaces and punctuation do not matter). You can use ANY legible font, stylized any way you want, or you can draw it by hand and use graphics. It can be horizontal, vertical, at an angle, or like an ocean wave. It can be any size or color you want (even mixed sizes and colors). Spaces and punctuation do not matter. It can be located anywhere on the image, and it can be partially transparent, as long as it is visible.

The three required elements are (in any order):
1. Your legal name, or your Tradename (DA Name)1.
2. The Β© symbol exactly as shown, either drawn or typed.
MAC: option and g keys pressed at the same time : Opt+g.
PC: Hold down Ctrl and Alt at the same time and press c : Ctrl+Alt+c.
3. The year the image was created, followed by each year it was changed.

1 Your DeviantArt account name is perfectly OK to use, but your Real Name is often your best option. If you close or change your DA account in the future, it complicates things. You will need to change the copyright signature if you repost it on another site, and if there is a theft of the work that has you DA Name on it, and it goes to civil or criminal trial against the thief, you will have the additional step of proving that the DA Account belonged to you. Ideally, Trademarks and Tradenames should be Registered.

EXAMPLES
Β©Jane Doe 2008, 2009
Β© Jane Doe 2008
Jane Doe 2008Β©
Jane DoeΒ© 2008
Jane Doe Β© 2008
Β© 2008 Jane Doe
2008 Β© Jane Doe
ETC.

There are some artists I have seen who have used creativity in their copyright signature, as seen here:
Gackt by priteeboy [link]
Devil May Cry 3 - Dante
by priteeboy [link]
Story Time
by Healzo [link] , and a different version:
Going Down by Healzo[link]

This is an example of the signature being overlaid on top of the Β© symbol: Caged [link] .

The CROP TOOL is the biggest threat to your Copyright Signature, so placing your Copyright Signature along the edge of your work is not a good idea. Some artists incorporate their signature into their artwork. See how this artist ran her signature along the shirt/neck line Jensen Ackles - Dream Brother [link] (note: the Β© is missing) and an apple a day [link] (note: the Β© and year is missing).

Some Signatures actually look good with the art, like this one It's a new day
[link]
, although it is missing the year.

I hope you do not mind my intrusion.

Matthew

The only intrusive aspect of your comment was posting it on an image to which it is not related instead of sending it in a note. Thanks for your tips; I didn't know that I needed the year. I'll alter my watermark for future submissions.

inspiredcreativity In reply to treijim [2010-12-16 12:01:54 +0000 UTC]

I'll keep in mind using a Note. Sometimes people find an unsolicited Note to be intrusive, but it may be the best option.

treijim In reply to inspiredcreativity [2010-12-19 01:47:02 +0000 UTC]

That's what the notes system is for, though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inspiredcreativity In reply to treijim [2010-12-19 12:33:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the Note system is used by everyone I know here mostly for personal correspondence, for talking about private things you do not want everyone else to see. But as I said, I can see why one does not want to clutter art critique area with non critique things.

Still, there is the argument that talking about Copyright issues is something that could benefit all readers who see it, whereas putting it in Notes would mean no one else would receive the information.

Oh, well you should consider getting one, it's a huge advantage. If you can draw like that, imagine how well you'd draw with a tablet. But if using a mouse is your thing, that's cool.

He's got the hair... I like this bold, glowy lighting. It makes me think of the desert as evening starts to come so the temperature is starting to drop. Well I could go on a rant about how angelic and royal he looks but then it'd get annoyingly redundant so I'm going to say the one thing I think this lacks: texture. It's too smooth and perfect looking. Realism has to have those small bumps in the skin and fibers in the cloth. Right now he looks like an overly Photoshopped Justin Bieber, no offense. It's just like with those magazine ads where they've gone too crazy with fixing "imperfections" they make the people look inhuman and fake.

treijim In reply to sockstealingnome [2010-05-20 22:14:25 +0000 UTC]

I find that comment a little confusing. By "redundant", do you mean in relation to other comments so far? Or in general? Because in general, I find your criticism redundant; I drew it smooth on purpose because that's how I wanted it. I've done other portraits with more realistic skin texture and this is one of my portraits without that extra leap of realism. It's completely intentional. Don't worry about trying to say something unique or different -- say whatever the heck you want Thanks for your compliments

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sockstealingnome In reply to treijim [2010-05-21 18:56:27 +0000 UTC]

People only do it to help. You could easily fix it by saying no critique in the artist's comment.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

treijim In reply to sockstealingnome [2010-05-21 22:07:09 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind people critiquing my work a bit. When dA changed the layout some time ago and removed that critique preference option (I normally changed that to "critique discouraged") it became more difficult, but it was replaced with an option to enable 'critiques'. I never enable this, hoping that people would pick up on it, but it's too subtle. Also, people used to give critique when I explicitly asked for none and I just came across as rude when I pointed out that I wasn't looking for help -- as I probably am to you right now. So it's not that I don't want people to critique, it's more that I would like people to accept what I say when I say that I don't find their critique to be valid. Sorry for rambling

sockstealingnome In reply to treijim [2010-05-21 23:22:42 +0000 UTC]

A lot of people don't read. Maybe you should just say thanks for the critique but I won't be chaning anything. I think that's about as nice as it can be said without anyone taking offense.
