Description Tommy Richardsen // Trichardsen // Facebook // 500px  // Google+ // Instagram

The milky way up here looks far from what can be seen in the southern skies, but add the aurora and it gets quite interesting.

Captured in Reisadalen, Nordreisa, Troms, Northern Norway.
Nikon D800E, 15mm, F2.8, iso 1600, 25 seconds.

I've followed your work for a good amount of time now. Although I am often impressed by your shots of stars and northern lights, this shot brings your work to a new level. Although a lot of people can capture stars, northern lights, or both, but this shot positions the Milky Way between a barrage of colorful radiation. The colors of the lights blend perfectly into the stars and the darkness beyond, and the silhouette of the pines in the foreground add perspective to the photo and ground it, but without distracting from the focus of the photo itself. I would have to say that this is the most impressive shot of the heavens above I have seen to date.

Is this from this weekend? The aurora was amazing Friday night. I live in Alaska and we were staying out in a cabin, it was incredible with the naked eye. I really need to invest in a camera for nights like those!

Btw what is a good beginners camera for getting pictures of the northern lights? Nothing for profession use, just for getting awesome pictures for Facebook and family.

Well if you want to get off cheap go for something like the Nikon D3300 (3200) and a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (or the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 ex dc hsm), that will give you a good setup, the D3300 can handle quite high iso and the lens is fast, so you can easily capture the northern lights with that.

I'm really surprised that the auroras actually move that fast too (never seen one myself). Usually you see timelapses of them sped up, but
they just showed one recently on the news in realtime. They move quite flowy and fast enough you hardly need timelapses.

Also AWEWSOME photo

Trichardsen In reply to nazo-gema [2014-09-25 14:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
Most often the timelapse is played at the speed it is shot at, so if take 10 seconds exposures with 11 seconds interval, each second of film equals over 4 minutes of real time, the slower auroras you see in videos is just the same timelapse clips slowed way down, to film the aurora at least in any watchable quality you need some really hefty video cameras, most of them cost more than most cars.
