thanks for including your settings in your sport action shots is very helpful.
with and ISO of 1600 the image is not very grainy at all & it has such nice focus. You also always manage to capture the emotion in the shot. Well done

You're welcome, Chibi...that's exactly why I put them
This was shot with an FX camera...which has a full frame sensor. Because of its larger size over DX format is produces less noise.
Thank you very much my friend

Interesting, I didn't know a full frame sensor produced less noise.

Thanks so much for the link. The article was really well written, easy to understand & didn't lose my attention with technical information that I'd never understand. I actually feel like I could explain it an interested person....and the bucket analogy worked for me. Wish they would come down in price. Thanks, much appreciated.

Awesome...I was afraid that maybe the tech mumbo-jumbo might bore you. Glad it didn't.
They will eventually, once there is a mass educated consumer cry/demand for them. Consider yourself among that group now. Honestly, they way over priced currently but I needed one for the wide-angle capabilities and now the D4 is my camera of choice. I have a Nikon 300s (a DX camera) that can be considered still as brand new I have maybe taken 50 shots on it...in two years

chibiharuka In reply to Trippy4U [2013-02-26 21:45:41 +0000 UTC]

Wide angle use was my motivation for getting a fx used camera....
but for now I'll have to rent one w/a lens to try it out.
My D7000 is very nice though I often feel the shots aren't crisp...but that could be me.

Poor barely used 300s, but I think if I had a D4 I would use that one too!
It's really....really nice!

I bookmarked the site for future information, seems like a good one.
And I do appreciate the help from you.

Trippy4U In reply to chibiharuka [2013-02-26 23:59:21 +0000 UTC]

That's a great idea to rent one first...try the D800 or the older D700 (I have that one too)...or a D4 if they are available. The D7000 is a great camera. Your sometimes dissatisfaction with crispness may be the lenses you are using. The kit lens aren't as good I think...but I don't own any so its hard for me to do a comparison test.

Renting is the smartest way to see if you need or want a particular piece of equipment.
Its to be expected in many lenses. The hood could if not on correctly...but the hoods are designed for the lens and shouldn't cause any interference.
A 50 is a must have and the 1.4 is the perfect choice. Its a good exercise to go out on a shoot carrying just the 50. You can step back or forward. You become a human zoom
NO...never get rid of the 80-200 2.8 unless you are upgrading to a newer model...now the 70-200. That's a fine piece of glass and that fast aperture is a game saver in many situations. The 70-300 is good glass too...but the slow aperture is problematic under certain shooting conditions...like indoors. And if you buy new lenses...try not to buy DX lenses. They really are only designed for DX cameras. If ever you buy a FX one...you;ll have to get all new glass to use on them. My and many professionals three main lenses are: 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. I never leave home without them and they provide a photographer with the tools to handle 90 percent of most assignments. But they are very expensive...but same as Rome wasn't built in a day, in time by saving you can get them all.

Here another helpful site if you don't know of it already [link]

I don't think renting would be to costly, & a nice way to try something new.

I have been having more noticably vignetting problems w/my lens lately it's a 18-70mm f3.5-4.5, my go to lens.
Do you think the lens hood would cause the vignetting? Maybe just needs some tlc.
Bought a 50mm f1.4, but I'm so used to having a zoom it's been hard for me to work w/it.
It does improve the crispness though, so you're probably right about the lens...
& I'm sure when I get excited I move.
When I'm feeling strong I pull out an old 80-200mm f2.8, but it's so heavy.
I've considered trading it in for a 70-300mm, but I'm not sure that's smart.
Thanks for your input.

Trippy4U In reply to chibiharuka [2013-02-27 17:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Also, if you buy the battery pack grip for your camera you will find that the 80-200 won't be as cumbersome to use because you'll have room for your hands to hold it all comfortable. That's not the only reason to consider the grip though...most of them will boost the frames per second and have vertical shutter releases, plus the additional battery almost assures you'll never be up the creek w/o a paddle should your battery die.

chibiharuka In reply to Trippy4U [2013-02-27 22:25:55 +0000 UTC]

I have a long list of, "wish I could buy items," so I try to prioritize.
I wish, research, count pennies & reconsider.
I thought the grip would add to much weight so it was replaced by the thought of a new tripod.
Do you keep your battery grip permanently attached to your camera?
I like to be comfy & steady, & and love using the 80-200...will move it back up my list.
Thanks for your time & thoughts it's very helpful.

Trippy4U In reply to chibiharuka [2013-02-28 00:20:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes...the grips stay on...always. I'm not comfortable without it. It makes the camera heavier but that's what straps are for...to lighten to the load

Always do what you are most comfortable with. What is right for me may not be right for you. In fact the only reason I am not a Canon user is precisely because they didn't feel comfortable in my hands. The Nikon felt right. I had done my research on both cameras and they were near identical in options and technology...so it came down to comfort because I knew I was going to have to live with it for a long time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chibiharuka In reply to Trippy4U [2013-02-28 19:27:31 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the grip is an accessory I should consider.
And comfort is a big part of that consideration, I agree,
esp if it helps in different areas.
I will avoid the ones from china, but I thought a used one might work, while saving a little.

I like your exercise w/the 50mm, I will give that a try.
It's a lens I read so many good things about I had to get one,
but haven't given it the time it deserves.
So I'll add human zoom to my list of things to try.

Your list of lenses are all zooms, do you feel challenged when you use a prime lens?
Though I guess w/your experience you're probably past that.

The 80-200 will stay w/me, maybe a grip will make it more friendly to use.

My Rome will take much more then a day to build, but that's ok.
I just like to make smart, informed choices as I piece things together.
And I read a lot so I'll add dpreview to my list of materials.
Thanks for everything, you are just a plethora of information, much appreciated

Its one of the greatest lens ever made and for the price unbeatable.
No, I don't feel anything like that... I carry my 50mm alongside those other three in my bag. When I use it I actually feel more free because so much less compositional decisions are needed to make, as opposed with a zoom
You are very wise and very smart...conservatism in the photography equipment game is a virtue. I think its the males who get gadget crazy. The females are more levelheaded when it comes to that stuff. I guess because they had practice as little girls playing with Barbie dolls. You see, the Camera is like Barbie...they sell it to you relatively cheap but man oh man when you want to accessorize her you are going to pay through the nose. You didn't buy a camera...you bought a lifestyle
No rush Chibi....from what I see you are doing fantastic with the stuff you have right now

chibiharuka In reply to Trippy4U [2013-02-28 19:16:25 +0000 UTC]

For me the zoom allows me to get closer, which I love, w/o being intrusive,
I've never satisfied w/my positioning w/o the zoom.
I need to just give the 50mm a chance, some bonding time.

Don't think Barbie is a thrift store kind of girl, but it works for me.
I can't afford to just go out & buy everything, though that would be kinda fun!
