For a very long time--before I was really into photography especially, but even recently I had a hard time seeing the beauty in the forgotten, abandoned  industrial sites of the world.  It wasn't until I started seeing images like this that others have done that I saw the possibilities in them.  At this point it's only possibilities I see--finding the compositions as you have done here is the really hard part.  Also, proper processing is required as I don't think this would have the same impact in color.  Maybe I am wrong about that...I often am

Its extra potent because slowly these industrial factories across America are fast becoming a thing of the past as we have given up manufacture in this country. And so in a sense its like photographing Bill Cody's wild west...part of a long  ago yesterday. They are abandon and forgotten now. When walking through them alone the "subjects" and how the light is cast on them seemingly dictate how they want to be "represented" all on their own accord. At least this was my experience doing when doing this project. You are not wrong in my opinion...B&W is so much more real even though we see in color.
I thank you John for your interest and encouragement and if ever you get an opportunity to photograph one of these babies...by all mean you must. I am certainly you would do a very commendable job

Totally agree with you, Richard--especially the 'we have given up manufacture in this country' part.  It's true and it's sad and all we have now are the bones of the greatness we once enjoyed and took pride in.  It's still there in some places but not like it was.  I've never been in an abandoned factory--they are rare out west here.  Again, they are here but I haven't seen them living on the prairie as I do.  I would definitely like to have the opportunity to shoot in and around one sometime though.

There used to be a TV program on Halogen called 'Photo Xplorers' where this group of photographers would travel Europe and sneak into old factories and industrial sites.  Sounds interesting on the surface, but there was very little actual photography done or shown and when they did show the shots they came so fast you couldn't really get a look at them.   At least, I couldn't, but now I have my old man bifocals and maybe could see them better

Mostly it was about them plotting their raid and stressing about getting caught.

is that as what it is or you burn (or add) a line that's pointing to no. 5 to make it look like a clock? whatever it is, that's interesting

Trippy4U In reply to MargarethHS [2009-08-22 14:55:58 +0000 UTC]

I never manip my images by adding elements. I just work with that that already exists. Here I did burn that shadow a bit. Maybe I "overcooked" it I'm not sure that this is a clock. I never seen a clock with 5 O'Clock at that position. But I do agree that the photograph intrigues me as well.
