Description From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were -- I have not seen
As others saw -- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring --
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow -- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone --
And all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone --

From 'Alone' by Edgar Allan Poe

This poem appeals to me because I can really relate to it. The feeling of not belonging and of being different.
As a child I used to take a detour when I was walking home from school, choosing to go through the forest rather than sticking to the road. I could spend hours in that forest, and I never got lost- no matter how deep into it I wandered. There was a particular tree that I would return to year after year and I would always give it a hug.
My love for the natural world was not well tolerated in school and other kids made fun of me for it. In their eyes I was not normal. But now as an adult, looking back, I sometimes wonder if I was in fact the normal one. I saw myself as part of Nature, not separate from it. Maybe the way we have separated ourselves is abnormal.
I was told years ago that there were plans to cut down that forest to make way for new areas of houses and streets. Having moved away from my childhood home, and never having been back, I don't know if it ever happened, but in my mind the forest is still there.

Watercolour and coloured pencils.

When I was in the lower grades, sometimes a couple of my classmates and I would go home "the grassy way." By this I mean we would walk home on the other side of the ditch that ran alongside the road. Some sections were just wide enough for us to walk between the ditch and the fence. Near the end of this path was a hump of earth just high enough for us to either jump from comfortably, or walk around if we chose.

Hmm, did we stop going that way because it became overgrown and run down, or did it get overgrown and run down because we stopped using it?

Regarding your last comment: I recently used Google Earth to look over my old neighborhood, which has since been considerably built up. A small creek I used to play next to for hours growing up has been all but eradicated except for a tiny section that runs past the very first corner store I ever knew (that has since changed hands multiple times). Not enough money could be gained by culverting and burying that portion I suppose.

Thank you so much for your comment! All humans need to stand up for our trees and our forests!

Wow! I am really amazed how similar are our stories!! Your artwork is absolutely awesome and it truly "resonates" with me...
Well, what does it mean to be "normal"? IMHO it depends on how the norm is set... If the norm allows clearing of forests for the sake of money - I am proud that I do not belong to the category "normal".

That is so deep. It reminds me of a similar feeling to that, especially the poem. Nice job with this painting!
