Description I was playing with the Talis and Friends formula again, this time tweaking more stuff in the formula, it took a very long time to find the right basic shape for this. Then had a "fun" time finding textures and gradients that worked with it and enhanced the look of folded paper, because most OCAs were either doing nothing at all on it or just looked really stupid.

So anyway, this is what I came up with 20 layers later, and I'm very relieved it's done. It was a very frustrating piece from the moment I started it, it just wouldn't cooperate. I decided to enter this into the Talis and Friends contest instead of Vitality because I put much more effort into it and did more parameter tweaking, that and I just like it more.

Made with Ultra Fractal 4. [link]

**I may share the parameters for this with a bit of persuasion, I've learned a lot from looking at other people's stuff and I like the idea of sharing. Note me if interested.**

hmm... looks like something I tried to do a LONG time ago. I never quite worked it out to work well though. Congrats on this one.

The orange, as commented before, really doesn't add much to the image, only bothers. In bigger version it could work, if the smaller triangles have the same colour too.

At first this seemed a bit dull and "done", but the bigger version really shows what's different: the great texture. It really feels like the thing is made out of crumpled paper.

Very good and strong image overall!

I agree, on the smaller image the orange stuff looks a bit tacky now that I'm looking at it again, especially in the preview where it just looks like an odd cloud or something. I'll see if I can maybe tone it down for posting here, can probably be done with some gradient or alpha channel manipulation on that layer.

Thank you, I spent a lot of time trying to get the texture right, it looks a lot better in the poster-size render.

Sometimes smaller images are better, sometimes not. This is the time of "not".
But yes, IF you have the energy (I sure as hell wouldn't) to tweak the orange out, the image would be more "whole" and give the effect the orginal would give. The texture needs to stand out! Even though mini-images don't give it the complete power.

I'll see what I can do, actually I think I might get away with just cropping it.

Love those angles, and the simple color scheme is right up my alley. Great work!

Now you can give me some tips/guides!
How to create fractal image using UF!
I'm telling you, your a fast learner.

LOL!

I don't really have any tips, just a lot of free time, reading tutorials and trial and error. I'm not able to work or go to school at the moment, so I use self expression as a therapeutic thing that keeps me occupied.

Nah, I was just kidding Tryst.

Yup trial and error...experimentation always gets you somewhere
and produce something wonderful all the time.

I am glad, seeing people like you goint thru a tremendous
creative output right now. Keep them [fractal deviation] coming!

Thanks, and for the .

It was made completely with Ultra Fractal 4, other than text. It's a great program, not free but you can download the trial version try it out (has all the features of the full version but the images say "evaluation copy" or something on them when you render them). [link]

the first thing I thought when I saw this peice was "reminds me of escher" and in full veiw even more, the contrast is perfect, the gradient perfect... and it does look like an (unimaginably) complex origami peice. I really really like this peice.

The only thing that bugs me it the tad bit of transparency, or rasterization showing as rusty orange at the top. Whether this is intentional or not it adds another color to the composition that I din't think really needs to be there.

AT ANY RATE, a beautiful, masterful peice.

P.S. - What program did you do this with?

Beautiful

Thanks, the orange-ish bit at the top doesn't make much sense at this size, in the larger render I made for printing you can see that it's repeated in the smaller triangles further down the spiral so it actually serves some purpose and adds a nice texture/highlight. But yeah, I agree that it is distracting on the smaller image here.

I'm happy you like it, it was made with Ultra Fractal 4. [link] - it's not free software but it's reasonable and definitely worth it.

That is just too sweet. The shape and texture are both perfect and certainly look like folded paper. Nice job.

Thanks, I worked really hard getting the paper texture right. Unfortunately you lose a lot of the detail at this size.
