Description This I am ridiculously proud of! West Coast art is a lot harder than it looks. I'm hoping Nik will still get it. Things were sketchy last we talked but, we shall see.

yes this style is much harder then it looks and most people do not understand that until they try themselves.

Is Nik from a northwest coast tribe?

You've got that right, it's so hard to make everything fit and not make it look cluttered or imbalanced. You look like you've got the hang of it though
And, no Nik isn't from a tribe. He grew up on the coast and loves everything about it. I suppose this is his way of showing his love for it.

Do you know the pacific northwest beliefs behind Orca?

A Non native getting a tattoo of a pacific northwest coast style is cultural appropriation and is something that I and many other natives do not support.

β€œCultural appropriation is the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group. It denotes acculturation or assimilation, but often connotes a negative view towards acculturation from a minority culture by a dominant culture. It can include the introduction of forms of dress or personal adornment, music and art, religion, language, or social behavior. These elements, once removed from their indigenous cultural contexts, may take on meanings that are significantly divergent from, or merely less nuanced than, those they originally held. Or, they may be stripped of meaning altogether.”

Furthermore if you research Pacific Northwest coast style art you will find out that many of the symbols represent certain individuals, familes and tribes and only certain people have the right to use the symbols which is usually determined by linage. There are other ways of being able to use the symbols/pictures but those would involve adoption or marriage into the tribe. If you are a fan of this art style then become a collector or even try designing your own. But once things such as tattoos or selling the art then you are taking possession of something that is not yours.

There are exceptions to every rule but I find most people just get the tattoos because they think it looks cool but they have no idea about the meanings behind the art.

I did not know that. Thank you for your enlightening words, I'll pass them onto Nik whose choice it is to get the tattoo, not mine.
