Well I wouldn't say the seriousness kills the show. It helps to add some realism, and show that even bad things can come at the happiest moments. But then we can also find some happiness in those dark hours. "For that which causes us trial shall yield us triumph", as Albert Pike said.

yes, but the show's purpose isn't to be taken seriously, it's whole selling point is to be a novelty Β series, so they take away their own selling point by adding realism. The point of Nanbaka is to be fun and to poke fun at the unrealistic points in other anime, by adding the realism they affectively shut down their own priority as a series while slowly becoming an incredibly hypocritical show. A parody show without the Parody is nothing.
