Description

At one point a drew a couple pics of my night elf from World of Warcraft but never really got into making WoW art. However, since I quit I've been wanting to complete one picture in remembrance of my favie NE priest. I haven't played since about three months after Cataclysm and I am 99.9% sure I will never play again (unless by some odd occurrence it becomes Free to play lol.)

About five hours of work in photoshop. I am still learning how to paint, finding my comfort zone. I managed to cram all five hours into 12 mins of video so check out the process if you're interest, link below.

So, thanks for looking!

I've been inspired by lots of artists that drew Night Elves. From Chibi to Life-like, to the original model from World of Warcraft. And in each of those there were both good and bad qualities. Be it awesome lighting, perfect shadows, or just an overall aura of beauty.

Your drawing though, has it all. The skin's got awesome shading and you've did an amazing job, copying the fire's ambience on the skin, by adding yellow/red/orange to the skin!

The lighting and coloring overall are done amazingly well. The contrast between the blue/purple Night Elf's skin and the red/yellow/orange fire is truly amazing!

Then there's the anatomy. The proportions of every element of her face match up perfectly for this point of view! The mouth's not too big, as is the nose. The eyes... The eyes is something a lot of artists have problems with, since they have no pupils and ?radiate? light. The facial tattoo is very nice. I don't think it's one of the standard World of Warcraft face paints and that makes it all the more awesome!

Overall, this picture is probably the best image of a Night Elf I've ever seen! You've did an amazing job!

Thank you so much for the critique!

I started with a choice of two total sketches I'd done of my night elf priest and both were of her face. One had the three marks over the eyes (her real markings) and one had this design. I just ended up picking this one because I am a total sucker for profile portraits, not to mention the non-typical marking.

I really love elves and night elf was my fav in WoW, You are right about the eyes - I almost didn't add the stronger glow in the center for the iris but I ended up feeling that it would be a good addition, not to mention a slight indication of eyelid helps.

You make me feel totally bashful - I see all the professional art on the WoW site and all these artists that pop out pics more detailed than I could dream of at my current skill and then you say you think mine is one of the best. Makes me practically weepy.

Thanks again <3

By the light of Elune this is amazing. I absolutely love the glow of her earring contrasting to the fiery background. It's giving this picture a strong sense of emotion in battle. The hair is well detailed and the skin is just perfect e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>. Her markings make me jelly that my Nelf DK in game can't have such lovely, colorful markings to her face! This is not a night elf i would mess with >.> did i mention i really want her earrings? All in all this is a fantastic piece of work and i must look at the rest of your gallery now e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="La la la la"/>

Thanks so much for the critique - I think, dare I say, you are the first one ever to critique any of my work since I began requesting them almost a year ago @_@

I tend to do my work as I go, making stuff up, add things - and the earring.. well, it wasn't planned lol However, her neck looked lonely and it needed something and I just love putting earrings, piercings, tattoos on my characters.

Since I am pretty sure you are the first to critique something I'd be more than willing to do a requested piece of art if you have a character you want brought to life or something dramatic. Let me know <3 I need the exercise - I would probably even record it ^.^

Wow you've never been critiqued? ILLOGICAL YOUR WORK IS AMAZING!

but yeah if your really willing my dk could use some love >.> [link] weird position i know but her armor is the tier 10 armor for deathknights if that helps.

That is almost exactly what my DK looked like lol Want some unique markings? I just finished my Geralt/Witcher piece so I will probably start on yours this week/end some time. And I might steer clear of tier armor for something a little more personal if that's okay with you

I started working on the pic last night, if I decide to upload the sketch to scraps I will link it to you - I might just wait. I am also recording it. There is still a bit to go so I am unsure when it will be finished, depending on my level of motivation and distractedness it could be later this week, earlier next week.

Excellent video along with this creation.

I'm glad you decided to include a background that influenced the entire piece and the lighting and shadow scheme is so cool watching it unfold in the video. For this piece I don’t have to wonder how you created it but I can see you enjoyed yourself creating with such an eye for detail in a condensed version that doesn’t show your challenges or commentary that I may miss if the music wasn’t so provocative and fitting well with the art while the imagery mesmerizes me.

Thank you for allowing it to exist in your mind and now in mine. All the images I have are technical in nature without beauty but functionality and a sense of pride that takes me to your site to find beauty in art as you create is something I miss, and seem to seek out whenever I can

Have a wonderful day and a better night so you can dream some more to be able to create such masterpieces.

^..^

It is so awesome to receive this kind of feedback. That I could create
something that touched you or reached into you in such a way toΒ
inspire this kind of reaction really does floor me. I feel like such a novice,
really I think I am and I have so much to learn, but I am so proud of
what I've accomplished through determination alone. I wanted something
to embrace what I feel when I am immersed in fantasy... it's not always
about the people or things, for me it's how deeply I can delve into a world
that is nothing like the one embracing my reality. Fire, spirit, the soft caress
of a story I am creating in my mind- that's where you can always find me.

Thank you

I've seen the video of you drawing this. This is just... Wow D:! I always wondered how people actually drew these kinds of digital images. I wonder... how long did it take for you to get this skilled with Photoshop ? I've tried my hand at it, by sketching on paper with a pencil, scanning it and coloring it via Photoshop, but I can't seem to color it the way I want. Maybe I just need better equipment (as I don't have a tablet). Do you have a tablet? Damn... I'm asking too much questions again, am I? Aww, darn it! Did it again D:! Anyway, I wrote what I wanted to say of the picture in the critique. I hope you got it XD

I am 27 now and I've been using Photoshop since high school, about 15 yrs old. However, I didn't do much art, it was mostly image editing.

At first I used my mouse ([link] ) <- example of my mouse art. Early in my gallery is lots and lots of art with my mouse. Then a couple years ago my husband bought me my first tablet, a inexpensive Wacom Bamboo Fun. I still use it since we're always broke lol it will be a long time before I can afford an upgrade, but it's fine for now.

The quality of my work changed significantly with the tablet. Mines just about 5 inches across and I seem to do alright with it.

Also, line art is a tricky thing. If you want to have nice smooth line art I think a lot of illustrators use Adobe Illustrator to do their lines (in the least) since it is insta-vector. Perfect lines. I am still learning Illustrator but I don't prefer it since I tend to like my sloppy lines lol

But yea, mouse drawing is difficult. I still even draw on paper and ink on paper then scan it and tweak it in photoshop and up load. I am way too impatient to do line art digitally most the time.

Thanks for the comment and I don't mind questions, I can be quite the jabberer myself ^.^

How would you suggest to start out? Continue to practice coloring sketches I make on paper with a pencil, or start from scratch in Photoshop?

But yes, I've looked at the other drawing you linked and you can see a great improvement. I think it's most notable in the hair But still, it looks really nice, even if it was created with a mouse.

I am just worried I won't ever create nice digital art, since I'm not so fond on tablets right now. Maybe that's because I haven't worked with one yet, but I don't know. How long did you practice with your tablet, before you created what you did with your tablet ?

Anyway, thanks for your nice words and comment

Love,

Working on a tablet can seem daunting and pointless when you don't have one. I didn't really expect a vast improvement but there was one.

If you want to continue/get better at doing digital work I highly recommend getting a tablet.
[link] {EB5A996C-64B6-4174-96AA-05CBD7F58FD4}
^ Seems expensive but with love and care they last a long time. Mine is going on 4 years I think ([link] ) <- my version, was about 99$ when my huz bought it.

What I do now is draw most of my stuff on paper and make minor tweaks in PS. If I want to redo the lines or something, then I Scan the image, load into photoshop, make a new layer for my drawing, and start tracing the lines. From there you can drop the original drawing if you want and add backgrounds or color it.

I can't even imagine doing my art without my tablet now days @_@

Thanks for the answers to my questions! I will surely check the tablets out and get to train with them once I have them (Also, thanks for the links, those are really neat :3).

The way you explained with scanning the image is what I do now too. Except for the part where you redraw the lines and drop the old image. I guess it would be best to learn to properly use Photoshop before starting off at scratch, right?

Anyway, thanks for the advice, it really helps

No worries, I am self taught in Photoshop. I teach myself everything I can, I absorb everything that I can. I have a photographic memory so i find some tutorials hard to follow if people skip steps or at least don't show them, even showing without explanation is better than not showing it.

I am thinking about making tutorials again because I think I don't learn the way people typically do, I also suspect I am slightly dyslexic as I often have problems repeating numbers and spelling out loud. Maybe people like me will find it makes more sense.

IF you need more help don't hesitate to ask
