Miscalculations – Chapter 9: DrowningThe party was in full swing by the time they got there, only fifteen minutes after the dance had officially started. A.E.D found himself scanning the crowd for Izm, but couldn’t find him. Liz tugged on his arm.
“There are my friends. I’ll meet you back here at 10:30, okay?” she called over the blaring techno song.
“Okay,” he yelled back. And off she went in a flurry of white silk to join her friends at the concessions table. A.E.D wandered a bit to the left, wondering what to do now. He had never intended to come, really. He never knew what to do at dances, so he never went. It was simple.
The techno song changed to a rap song. The rap song changed into a slow dance. Rinse and repeat. A.E.D found his eyes scanning for Izm. He would be here, right? A.E.D had to tell him something. But the boy didn’t appear.
Near the end of the dance, the last song in fact, A.E.D saw who he was searching for. On stage. The DJ had a raised platform to keep the dancers away from his stuff, and he had moved his things out of the way to let Izm, and Izm’s mic, have enough room.
Rire stood upon the stage. A.E.D blinked, and everyone quieted. No one had thought he was here.
“Students and friends, our dance is coming to a close. As this was a big success, you can bet we’ll be doing it again, soon. Here with me is one of our own pupils, and he is going to sing our ending song. Everyone grab your date.”
All around A.E.D, boys and girls joined hands and placed palms on waists and shoulders. There was a slight cough behind him. He turned. There was Liz.
“Shall we?” she asked, offering her hands. A.E.D took them distractedly, not really seeing her or hearing her. She placed her arms around his neck and placed his hands on her waist.
The music started. Izm’s mouth opened.
“Oh, hmmm, yeah.” His eyes locked on A.E.D, and something in them crumbled when he saw A.E.D’s hands on Liz’s hips. His eyes met A.E.D’s and something passed between them. What are you doing? A.E.D’s eyes asked him. And for a moment, Izm forgot. Then the music queue came.
A deep breath in.
“Don’t pretend you’re sorry, I know you’re not. You know you got the power to make me weak inside.”
He didn’t look at A.E.D, but somehow, the other boy knew it was for him. His hands loosened on Liz’s waist.
“And girl you leave me breathless, but it’s okay. ‘Cause you are my survival, now hear me say:”
Izm seemed to gather his courage and his head tilted up. He met A.E.D’s eyes again.
“I can’t imagine life without your love. And even forever don’t seem like long enough!”
His eyes pleaded with A.E.D’s.
“Cause every time I breathe, I take you in, and my heart beats again. Baby I can’t help it, keep me drowning in your love. And every time I try to rise above I’m swept away by love. Baby I can’t help it, you keep me drowning in your love.”
All around him, couples danced close together, but A.E.D couldn’t see any of them. He didn’t know that he had pulled away from Liz and had stopped dancing because he couldn’t feel his body. He couldn’t feel her questioning eyes on him or hear her voice when she asked him what was wrong.
He could only see Izm.
“Maybe I’m a drifter, maybe not. ’Cause I have known the safety of floating freely in your arms.”
A smile; rueful and nostalgic.
“I don’t need another lifeline, it’s not for me.”
His eyes drilled into A.E.D. I need you, they seemed to say.
“’Cause only you can save me, oh can’t you see. I can’t imagine life without your love. And even forever don’t seem like long enough!”
A.E.D had never seen Izm so emotional before. Except, maybe, that time before Izm kissed him. He took a step forward. Liz grabbed his arm.
“What’s going on? Who is that? …His voice is fantastic!”
“That’s Izm. That’s Izm. Izm.” He pulled out of her grasp and wound his way through the couples to the foot of the stage.
“Every time I breathe, I take you in, and my heart beats again. Baby I can’t help it, keep me drowning in your love. And every time I try to rise above I’m swept away by love. Baby I can’t help it, you keep me drowning in your love.”
“Izm,” A.E.D whispered. “What are you doing?”
“Go on and pull me under, cover me with dreams, yeah. Love me mouth to mouth now, you know I can resist. ‘Cause you’re the air that I breathe.”
Izm jumped off the stage, taking the mic with him. He walked up to A.E.D who had backed up a few steps. No one was really paying attention to them, too caught up in the person across from them. Only Liz and Rire seemed to be watching.
“Even time I breathe I—and every time I breathe again! And my heart beats again, baby I can’t help it, keep me drowning in your love. And every time I try to rise above I’m swept away by love. Baby I can’t help it, you keep me drowning in your love.”
The note stretched out, tangible between them. Izm wasn’t looking at him. A.E.D reached out, not really knowing what he was doing, and grasped Izm’s chin, pulling it up so the boy faced him.
“Baby I can’t help it. Keep me drowning in your love,” A.E.D sang.
Izm took over. “Oh, got me drowning, keep me drowning in your love. Baby I can’t help it, can’t help it, no, no. Cause every time I breathe, I take you in, and my heart beats again. Baby I can’t help it, keep me drowning in your love. And every time I try to rise above, I’m swept away by love.”
“Baby I can’t help it. Keep me drowning in your love.” A.E.D’s voice trailed off. The two boys stood there, frozen, before Izm dropped the mic. A horrible screech of feedback rang out from the speakers. Izm turned and ran.
And date be damned, A.E.D ran after him.

I LOVE Tokio Hotel! But I wasn't really thinking about them when I was writing this. I was listening to my ipod on shuffle, and this song came up, and I was like...hey, this fits!

I'm glad. That's the hardest part about putting music in a fic, because it always seems to fit at the time, and then you go back and read it and think, "What the hell was I smoking?" But luckily, this one's stayed pretty constant for me.

That is also why I try not to write songfics. Myabe fics BASED on songs, but never straight up song fics.

My apologies. It was playing on my iPod when I was writing this chapter and I decided, "Hey, why not?" The begining fits pretty well.
