I just used a standard 18-105mm -- no money for a telephoto!

Slowly! I saw it from way down the beach and walked a few steps at a time, crouched, stopping every few steps to straighten up and take a photo. The eagle kept an eye on me, and I stopped when I felt I was as close as it would permit, and waited. It didn't seem to mind.
