Description "Azog saw that all his host in the valley was in a rout, and the dwarves went this way and that slaying as they would, and those orcs that could escape from them were flying south, shrieking as they ran. And hard by all the soldiers of his guard lay dead. He turned and fled back towards the gate.

Up the steps after him leaped a dwarf with a red axe. It was Dain Ironfoot, a son of Nain who fell a moment earlier. Right before the doors he caught Azog, and there he slew him, and hewed off his head. That was held a great feat, for Dain was then only a stripling in the reckoning of the dwarves. But long life and many battles lay before him, until old but unbowed he fell at last in the War of the Ring.

When at last the battle was won, the dwarves that were left gathered in Azanulbizar. They took the head of Azog and thrust into its mouth the purse of small money, and then they set it on a stake. But no feast nor song was there that night; for their dead were beyond the count of grief."

Couldn't agree more! A shame Jackson took too much liberties with the material provided.

Yeah, but the production had already begun when Jackson agreed to continue the Hobbit-trilogy. If he had been able to create the Hobbit-trilogy from the scratch I think it could have been much better in a similar more serious manner like the previous LOTR-trilogy had been. While I don't hate the Hobbit-trilogy and accept it like an alternate universe there is still much to be desired.

Thank you. This serie I drew required this scene and I knew from the start that this backround was going to be a real nightmare to plan and draw - it still puzzles me everytime I see it .

Thank you very much!

Too bad Azog didn't took an arrow in the knee... long way to run all those stairs up.

I really love all the detail of the equipment and armors, and the distinctive designs you gave to orc and dwarven equipment!

Reminds me of the old illustrations in magazines from the 1800s, good work!

Hehe, that would mean a real retro look then . Nevertheless, good 'n' old black and white, one can learn a lot from them about light and shading when drawing like this.

Thank you for the comment!

Thank you very much for your words.

Drawing characters is relatively simple, but scenery and other objects are my weakest point. Good to hear the overall composition still works

If scenery is your weakest object, you must have so many strengths! I do see it, you scenery is so beautiful.

Thank you. Illustrating these less-known stories is surely fun, and hopefully attracts more people to read more great stories from J.R.R. Tolkien.

You're absolutely right! Stories about Khazad should be popularized, otherways people will associate them as popcultural dwarves (rudeness, alcohol and Middle-earth's rednecks). Keep up your mission.

Dang blast and curses but this drawing is epic. And epic in the true meaning of the word. Not the undermined overused term the children like to use. It stirs up both respect and envy in me. I thank you.

Thank you very much for your words, sir. I could say the same about your digital portraits and character illustrations - traditional drawing ink & graphite pencil are more or less familiar to me, but tablet and digital painting simply drive me crazy.

Well thank you. But please don't ever give up your tradition habits in art, even if you do take on digital painting.

Well, thank you very much!

May I ask you what you mean with "old school"? Pen, paper and classical fantasy theme, perhaps ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gadock In reply to Tulikoura [2011-04-17 03:22:28 +0000 UTC]

I didn't mean any thing derogatory, Just that it was more of a classic type illustration, like you used to see in hardbound Edgar Rice Burroughs or Robert E. Howard novels.

Thank you, although I have to admit that I'm not familiar with this kind of features. It took me some time to realize what was happening, as comments kept flooding my inbox...

By the way, my best wishes to Tolkien group's donation project! This part of DA is unfamiliar as well, as I gave you some points that I had received some time ago (there're no better place for them, I say!)... although there was a donation box in your front page which I spotted too late. I don't know how much those points are in real currency - not too much I fear!
