Description acrylics 2011,
June 8th 1918 at Neuville-Vitasse, France. After an intense artillery barrage, Corporal Joseph Kaeble of the 22e Battalion (Canadien-Francais), C.E.F realized he was the lone survivor of his Lewis gun-section.
As the strong German raid advanced towards his post, Corporal Kaeble jumped over the parapet with his Lewis gun, emptying one magazine after another into the enemy. Although hit several times, he continued firing, blocking the enemy advance. Eventually he fell back into his trench, mortally wounded, and discharged his last cartridges at the now retreating Germans.
He died of his wounds during the night, and was awarded posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions.

This is where the term 'One man army' likely stems from.

It's hard to believe this 4 year tragedy was a full century ago...

In Valenciennes, not so far from were I live, in northern France, there is a roundabout on a "Place du sergent Cairns" (Sergeant Cairns' Place). His story can be found on the net, and is quite similar to Joseph Kaeble's.

I always thought like when i read about the Battle of Britain 1940, the British Pilots did something impossible when holding up the Luftwaffe, there were less planes pilots, and the Germans where well armed, trained and experienced.

Britain only won because of the Polish pilots, who fought their way through Romania and France, decided to join the British in their struggle.

The British weren't _only_ reinforced by the Polish.  When the Nazis took Checklosovakia, a good chunk of their Airforce flew to France and fought for the French.  When France surrendered, they went to Britain and continued to fight.

This song by Sabaton is about the various groups that fought in the Battle of Britain

Don't be so absolute with your statements! It's bound to get a less friendly history buff or internet geek up on your ass! The Polish pilots contributed to the British victory, but certainly not insignificant was the use of radars to anticipate German air raids and fight them out above Dover and the South instead of being caught off-guard, allowing them to take down most bombers before they reached any real targets of a significant value. Which in return aided in minimizing the damage to the RAF's war effort.
