wowww. once again, totally awesome. Question: did you do the street and stuff first and then layer on the letters and images above it? How did you get it to blend together so nicely?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TurquoiseHexagonSun In reply to transientzen [2007-01-08 15:10:12 +0000 UTC]

hmm tricky question, cos not even i can answer that.. the way i work is to just add lots and lots of layers on top of eachother. there probably are lots of drips in that painting that i covered up after seeing that they don't really fit/or spoil the composition.
well i started sketching the street first, then colored most of it up, then worked on the horizon then the sky and then repeated the process for countless times etc etc.. it took me around 3 days.

haptic [2006-10-02 17:38:39 +0000 UTC]

this is a really nice piece. I like the way you incorporate graphite into your paintings, as well as the hand-drawn type. I also really enjoy the layered effect of this piece, the separation from the skyline to the road points to a clear schism between the two. The little downward arrows really bring the eye back down into the remainder of the composition. You don't just get settled at the top. Congrats!

I think you have composed some very interesting letterforms. They are reminiscent of letterpress and woodcut typefaces. If you were to rework the "e" and the "h" with a little more precision, I think it would have a major impact on the whole piece.

i love metal/wood type and letterpress so much.. i'm glad you see a connection between the letters in the painting and letterpress.
thanks for the sweet comments!

I love the fact that text is used so subtle and has a beautiful presence but is not the main thing that is focused on. The highway scene as a nice sketchy and expressive feel using perspective and good color use to draw attention.
