Javert is jealous of another artist's rendition of him.Yeah, those dark shadows by the really old picture's cheeks? Those are sideburns. Srsly. They're epic.
The really old picture is in my 1909 edition of Les Miserables, published by The Century Co. I don't know who did the illustrations.

Javert belongs to Victor Hugo.
and I realize now that my sketched versions of Javert and my OC Pryce are, in fact, the same person. Except Javert is a bit taller and has straight greying hair

That they are! I actually had the opportunity to sing Javert's songs from the original French cast for a project in my French class after reading the novel. Being female with an awesome fake baritone, I took some of my curly hair, pulled it underneath my chin and over to the other side, and secured it with clips under the hat to make makeshift sideburns.

My teacher let me upload her discs of it to my iTunes, as a reward for being so 'involved' in class.
It's a class dedicated to Les Miz! Of course I'll be involved!
Our Christmas exam involved a question which was to describe Javert in appearance, personality, and motivation. I'm not joking.

Oh, well, since this is Canada, French is obligatory in schools, and we also have to do Geography and Science in French. We're placed in different levels for an entire school career after a test in fourth grade: Beginning, Low Middle, Middle Middle, High Middle, and Advanced.
I somehow managed Advanced, although I could always switch out (never!).

No--I didn't have space in my schedule, and I was studying in Italy the following semester. XD So I have a minor obsession with Italian literature (along with art, architecture and cooking).
Man, that's really cool. Some schools in the States offer Spanish from elementary school on, but I never ended up in one of those. I can read Italian decently, though.

I can speak it alright, if I've practiced for a while. Alas, it's been some time since I've practiced in earnest.
I can think of no poetry more beautiful than Dante's love poems. My prof read them out loud (in Italian, as he's a native speaker) and it sounded beautiful.

Oh, wonderful. I'm sort of like that with Spanish. French, I'm fluent, but my grammar's quite awful, even though I've learnt it since I was three.

Definitely read them! The book is "La Vita Nuova"--its a strange sort of book, half poetry and half explanatory prose. But its short and wonderful.

Ah, thank you! I was wondering who had done the artwork--it wasn't listed in the book and a quick Google search didn't turn anything up.
His work is fantastic. So emotional and perfectly fitting to the book.
