I bought mine with a student discount for about 150. I bought it from Academic Superstore. The only thing is that you HAVE to be a student. It still sounds pricey, but Toonboom is cheaper than Flash. It is also an industry standard and has been used in the Disney Toon Studios, The Walt Disney Featured Animation Studios, Fox, Nickelodeon animation movies, and countless of TV shows. So, knowing how to use it helps.

but but but but but
The software did not make the animation. I did. I drew it out on paper and then cleaned and colored it on the animation software. Meaning, that just buying the program will not make you suddenly become good at animation. But I can steer you in the right direction:
Here are some books that are a MUST for learning the basics of animation:
Animator's Survival Kit
The Illusion of Life
To be good in animation you have to be strong at drawing. So, DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW. So it until your eyes bleed and you start getting rough patches of skin on your hands. I am always working on something to draw, and a day where I did not draw a single picture make me depressed.
Draw from life, draw from pictures, just do it! THEN when you finally get around to buying Toonboom, it will simply make your life EASIER. Just like a good tool should. Also, when you buy Toonboom, I highly recommend you do the nifty tutorial that comes with it. It's easy to learn from and you learn all the awesome hot keys.
