The two Cascoons at the bottom make me think that if they knew the move Explosion or Self-Destruct than they would likely use it.

Perhaps they're spikes formed by solidified silk strands? Maybe not all silcoon/cascoon have then, but it's a feature they can develop by using strands to support themselves? Just a theory. : ) That's a cute pile you got there!

I think they're spikes that they can retract so as to lodge themselves in branches etc awaiting evolution. I think the silky strands cover the Pokemon generally so that might be why in some art the strands appear to be emerging from the spikes? Or maybe the spikes can also shoot strands of silk too?
