Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
Alright, since I've done a bit of pony SFM I think I can help a bit here
Vision 3/5
The issue I see the most in this is the vision isn't really clear, what exactly is going on, I understand vagueness is a thing but this just seems to be a couple of ponies in a couple of poses
Originality 2.5/5
Meh, Octavia looks content. Vinyl looks happy, usual character pairing, usual emotions.
Technique 2.5/5
OH DEAR GOD WHAT'S WITH THAT ARM!?
All jokes aside there isn't much technique put here, lighting is stock and it appears you only used the rotate tool. Here is one of my more recent pieces,
dusk-ealain.deviantart.com/art…
Notice the difference? The bends in Octavia's body look more natural, there's extra lights put in certain places, the fireplace uses both TF2 Muzzle-Flashes for the flames and has a gentle orange valumetric light to imply the flame's glow. So the trick with pony limbs is to actually use the axis editor (the thing that allows you to move stuff in the vertical and horizontal axis). Lights are a very important tool in SFM, you can make really nice images with just a couple of models and decent lighting, unfortunately going into detail about SFM lighting is to big to put on dA. So I will send you a little helpful guide for starting with lights steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles…
Impact 0.5/5
I personally don't see that much of an impact to this, not that it's bad or anything, it's just. Standard, as I stated above the techniques are very basic and so is the content of the image itself.
Overall I'd give this a 3/5, it's nothing special but it's a lot better then it could of been and I can see a bit of effort went into it.

In my defence I had installed SFM and the models about two hours previously and had no experience in getting stuff to do anything. It took me thirty minutes to be able to even find the settings to be able to move the models, let alone cameras. I just started moving them into some random poses before making this final set and then rendering it, hence the vagueness. I had no idea what I was doing at the time.
That being said, it needs help. I've had a look at the lighting diagrams that you linked and messed around with Octavia holding a Cello and I've just about got things looking somewhat natural, but I still am nowhere near a good level yet. Hopefully I'll be able to re-make this scene with better lighting and effects.

Understandable, this wasn't me attempting to attack you. I was just trying to show you some tricks, to be completely honest for just starting the software it's not that bad.
The best thing to do is to have a general idea of what you want first. Much like when doing any form of art that isn't a sketch, you have to have an idea in mind before leaping forward.
Besides those two things everything else can be summed up in the critique, if you ever want to know something the best advice I could give you is google it. You'll most definitely find a tut on it.
Something to note, you can smooth out the shadows and whatnot via r-clicking the camera window, going to "Render Settings" and putting the first two options to their highest level. Lights can also help smooth shadows, as you can adjust the radius (which is something I think the link touched on)

Thank you! It's the first time that I've tried something like this.
Regarding making it, I used a programme called SFM, or SourceFilm Maker. It's free for use from Steam. I also used the pony models from Poninnahka, and then moved their hooves and expressions, then rendered in 4K and touched up slightly in GIMP to smooth down a couple of edges.

Octavia's hoof bends far too weirdly. Never used SFM myself so idk how difficult it is to position the parts, but from an outside view, it doesn't look too good.
