Description
This is an adaptation of the Death card from the Robin Wood Tarot deck. I intend that this (or something very like it) will be my first tattoo.
Death in a Tarot spread rarely symbolizes actual death, instead it usually speaks more of the end of one state of being, and the beginning of another. Even an actual death isn't necessarily the end, it's just that those of us on this side of the river can't fully perceive or comprehend what happens on the other bank.
I like this version specifically because the red robe reminds me of the Poe story "Masque of the Red Death" (and its moral, that no matter your power or wealth or station, death will reach you whenever, whereever. It's the one thing that every human in existence shares.) I like that death is completely cloaked (alluding to the unknown and unknowable nature of "what happens after"). The white rose on the flag symbolizes purity and innocence -- the state in which we're all born (the new beginning after our old life ends).
