Gah! Darkwing Duck OCs! Yayyyyyy!
I did the great 'DW REWATCH' about 3 years ago. My brother and I were huge DW nerds growing up ( my younger brother moreso ) and we had a ton of merchandise from that show- even the crappy Tiger Handheld Game ( poor man's Gameboy, lol ) and even the gas gun which never worked properly and stunk to high heaven whenever you pulled the trigger.
I cheated on my duck OCs when it came to Disney. My duck OC for 'Darkwing Duck' I just lifted from my 'Ducktales' OC ( since the two worlds were compatible between the shows ) and then later, that same character was morphed into a 'MDTAS' OC ( which I really wasn't a huge fan of that series, but I had a ton of friends that were, so I played along and ended up doing my fair share of fanart XD )
I love that you named her Swan Song.

Wow! They made an actual gas gun for kids to buy? I'm sure parents loved that LOL
And I totally just learned rewatching the show that Duck Tales and Darkwing are both in the same universe. I did not realize that at all. I remember as a kid being so confused as to why Launchpad was in both shows. I could not grasp the concept back then. But I found out that there was even a comic where the characters all worked together. I so want to read it.
And Mighty Ducks, though I loved the look of the show, was, unfortunately, not that good. I tried watching some of that, too, recently and I just didn't care.

LOL yup- with the exception of the comic, Launchpad and Gizmoduck/Fenton were really the only ones that regularly appeared on 'Darkwing' so I can see how it would be easy to forget the two shows existed in the same universe.
Yeah- the Gas Gun toy was 'life-size' and to make it smoke there was a compartment you were supposed to put vegetable oil in. When you pulled the trigger though, it barely coughed up a few little tendrils of 'smoke' and the vegetable oil smell was really gross. Come to think of it- a toy you have to put cooking oil in for your kid would never fly in this day and age. Ha ha I miss the early 90s. What were they thinking?
And ha ha yeah- I never said it out loud because when I say some of my absolute best friends lived and breathed MDTAS, they lived and breathed MDTAS ( ran huge fansites back in the 90s, had doubles, even triples of all the figures still in their packaging on display in their rooms, did fanart and fanfiction, etc. etc. ), but that show was always a Disney cash grab. Most of my friends now as adults, even though they still love it rabidly, admit it's pretty bad XD
I once saw a website summarize it simply along the lines of 'hockey-playing alien ducks come to Anaheim to stop dinosaurs from taking over the world. I shit you not'. The more I read that paragraph over, the funnier it sounds everytime like- 'they were trying really hard to turn those Estevez films into a merchandisable cartoon!' LOL
I re-watched the series maybe 5 years ago for the hell of it, and I still enjoy drawing giftart of my friends' MDTAS OCs for them for something fun.

I really like the look of a lot of the OCs produced by the Might Ducks fandom, but I feel with the show itself, if you weren't into it when you were younger, you're not going to get into it as an adult because the quality of the writing and concept just wasn't there.
They really might as well made the whole show just be on Puck World and have it be about liberating their homeworld from the bad guys. Kind of a Sonic the Hedgehog type feel. I don't know why they needed to have it happen on Earth, especially when they didn't really have any likeable human characters. The main humans, their agent and the cop, were neither likable characters, nor could the viewers really relate to either one. There was really no reason to involve Earth and its people whatsoever.
I did, however, love Mallory and Tanya. Mallory was a strong, kickass woman, but she also had no problem being feminine either. She could go to the mall, be in a gun fight, wear a skimpy dress and beat up dinosaurs without taking a pause. She did it all. (And she is totally grown up Goslyn) Tanya, though I think the creators were trying to make another Gadget with that color scheme, was both brains and brawn. She was a tech geek, but that gal didn't have the typical girl body type and was totally built for some hockey.
That and, as I said before, I liked the look of the duck characters in general, but that's about it.

Oh most definitely- I agree with everything you wrote. I think the majority of it's fans these days love it simply for nostalgic reasons. There were a lot of things I *loved* growing up as a kid that when I've gone back to re-watch it, I'm like, 'my God, is this bad.' but I'll still watch it as a guilty pleasure because it brings back fond memories.
I agree the story would have made more sense and probably been more entertaining if they kept the characters in their own home planet- or if they even 'planet-hopped' kind of like 'Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys' so that we were treated to new alien races and plot points to keep things interesting. I think the problem was is that the writers were trying waaaaaayyyy too hard to tie everything back to the real Arrowhead Pond and real Mighty Ducks hockey team for tourism and merchandising and brandname reasons. It was that cash grab that Disney was holding over their heads that I think restricted the writers in a lot of ways, because there were some very talented, seasoned people on the creative team.
And Mallory and Tanya were two of the best characters. Mallory was always very strong and quick-witted and never used for romantic interest fodder ( tho I see fans ship her a lot with various characters, there really is no obvious love interest on the show. She shows no interest in anyone and in fact, disdain for at least 1 or 2 of them off and on ) and I always liked how Tanya wasn't the typical skinny-girl body-type. She had a very natural, larger woman shape and I thought that was refreshing to see in a cartoon for once.

Excuse me for interrupting the conversation, but I couldn't help but overhear. I used to be a fan of Mighty Ducks and remember a ton of websites during the 90s. I was obsessed with stupid show. Still am as a matter of fact. This may make me sound like a hypocrite but the show was pretty bad. If it weren't for the science fiction themes I wouldn't have bothered to watch it. Then again I was obsessed with a lot of shows that had bad writing and I still like them...for some odd reason (Dragon Ball Z anyone)?
I really wish I could've gotten that gas gun as a kid, but I doubt my mother would've approved of it. I don't think any parent would've approved it today (no thanks to those gun laws).
Ty-Chou: Cool character. I really wish Mighty Ducks could've been better, but every time I watch it I can't help but think TMNT rip off. I know that David Wise wrote a couple of scripts for Transformers and the original TMNT cartoon, but recycling the plots couldn't save the show.

LOL no problem ^_^ if you have been around the fandom that long, then you probably know or have known several of my friends.
There's plenty of shows and movies I grew up with that I totally loved that I look back on now, and I'm like 'Holy gods, that was so corny and vapid...' but I still love it for nostalgic reasons. I wouldn't say it's hypocritical to still love MDTAS while admitting its 'bad'. That's what we call guilty pleasures ^_^. You can still derive enjoyment out of something while admitting it's flaws.
And a LOT of shows tried to ride the TMNT tidal wave of success. Oh man, there were literally a ton of mutant/alien talking animals thrust into human society type shows all through the 90s and more- but a few actually were able to shine and rise on their own as successful franchises and I think where the difference was between those few shining diamonds and all those other 'TMNT rip-offs' was the writing.
As for the gas gun, believe me, you weren't missing much XD. My brother and I barely played with it because it hardly ever smoked properly, would make a really annoying, high-pitched whirring sound whenever you pulled the trigger, and it stunk of frying vegetable oil. We had more fun playing with the action figures and the NES game XD

I don't think I ever met some of your friends. I just admire their webpages from afar. It is what inspired me to get into fandom in the first place. I admit that I'm a very quiet person who rather prefers to observe others then interact with others. Still If it weren't for MDTAS I wouldn't have discovered Mary Sue.
That is exactly the reason why I still watch MDTAS, Dragon Ball Z and a bunch of other things. I can't help but be sentimental about the programs I grew up with. All of these shows are a part of our childhood, although I wish I would've exposed myself to Biker Mice from Mars more often. I kept trying to find some of the episodes online but its difficult. They really should release a DVD set or something. I've seen Road Rovers but never cared much about it.
(Oh, btw, lovely art).
>And a LOT of shows tried to ride the TMNT tidal wave of success. Oh that is for sure! Remember Extreme Dinosaurs and Street Sharks? Although I've heard of Extreme Dinosaurs, Street Sharks was the show I saw more often. Even though I was extremely young at the time I can tell that they were inspired by the TMNT. I know Biker Mice was another one of those shows that was inspired by TMNT, but it managed to shine on its own. I don't think ED and SS fair well though. I think the show flopped, but not as much as MDTAS which only lasted for 26 episodes. Didn't stop the fans from creating their own head canon.
Do you recall an artist named Candy Palmer? I know she has an account here on deviantart, but I know one of her furry comics was heavily inspired by TMNT too.
It sounds to me as though the product was cheaply constructed. Too bad. It would've been neat to buy one off of ebay. I've heard of the video game. Wasn't the main villain some of kind werewolf or something?
Must be hard to remove the stink of vegetable oil (lol).

Ah- well, one of my very good friends, Michelle, ran the 'Cool as Ice' forums ( she went by Calista in the fandom ). You may have stumbled across that site or her fanart at some point. Other friends went by 'Jax' and 'Seven'- but they were waaaay back in the day of MDTAS fandom online- 1996 and etc.
Oh yes, I remember 'Extreme Dinosaurs' and 'Street Sharks'. My brother and I watched maybe a few episodes of each- but they truly were terrible. 'Jawsome!'. Ughhh.... Shoot me. 'Biker Mice' was most definitely one of the ones able to stand on it's own. Despite it's audacious title, what really put it head and shoulders above the rest was it's writing. It also helped that it was a Marvel property and had experienced talent developing it- and it actually had deeper themes with it's highly political tone ( no surprise the creator went on to become involved in politics ). Plus, the series had the rare chance to get a reboot series 10 years after it ended, which can't be said for any of the other TMNT-wannabes. It really sucks that it is so difficult to get the original 3 seasons on DVD or even online. A lot of the problem lies with Disney owning the distribution rights, and Disney is terrible about releasing their own shows, let alone other properties they have bought XD
( And thanks for the comment on the art ^_^ )
I remember Candy Palmer from back when we both used to post art to SCFA/Yerf back in the 90s. Didn't she draw Swat Kats too, if I'm remembering correctly? Boy, I'm growing old.
Its been so many years since I played the NES game I barely remember. I remember the Ducktales game really well for some reason.

Those three I remember very well. I frequented that site all the time. I was so surprised that there were people drawing MDTAS fanart, I always thought I was the only one who enjoyed this series. Its a shame that that the fandom has died. I know that the old members are still active on this site, but many of them had moved on. And yes, I do remember Seven and Jax. I've seen their stuff on that site before.
As for Biker Mice, the fact that they use the theme of war surprised me. And I never knew that the creator got involved in politics! I wonder what political party he is in?
I've seen the reboot. Didn't care much for it. I only saw a few episodes of the original BMFM and wasn't thrilled that the reboot toned down the relationship between Charley and...Vinnie, I think his name is?
So Disney currently owns the rights to BMFM? Figures. That explains why its difficult to get a hold of any episodes of Darkwing Duck. I only have half of the episodes on DVD. I think I have the rest of the episodes that I got from another website. (Ty-Chou, if you are reading this I'll gladly give you the link, but I'm unsure if it works on your computer). They don't seem to be too appreciative of their fans. Unless of course if their fans are the kids.
I don't think I've ever seen Candy Palmer in the SWAT Kats fandom. I know she had drawn Biker Mice from Mars fanart and I think its still up on the old website.
*laughs* I tell myself that a lot. Sometimes I keep wondering why I'm still involved with fandom when everyone has left. Oh yeah, for funsies. And also I'm interested in the animation business. Hmm...that explains why I cling to this stuff (lol).
Oh yeah, the Ducktales game went really well. I know that they rebooted the game but for a different platform. I wish I could've played that game when I was younger but I was too busy playing Super Mario Brothers to care. I was kind of addicted to Mario back then.

Seven/Dianne ( Dawn, as i knew her in the RR fandom ) I haven't seen or heard from in years- we used to get together a lot when i was in college, but that was more than 10 years ago now. Jax and I went to the same high school and college. Calista/Michelle is really the only one left I still keep in touch wih regularly, when she's not too busy From what I've seen, DA seems to be the last hold-out for most fandoms. Fansites don't have the kind of community power they did back in the 90s, and people just find it easier to migrate to DA. PLus, the groups option on DA really helps to keep the content filtered to certain places, so it's easy to just join a group for the shows you love and get all your fanfic and fanart updates there and find fellow fans that way.
Over time though, fandoms slowly shrink and die off somewhat due to there being no new content, fans tend to move on to other things, and if the show doesn't even get DVD releases or reruns, it can't find new fans. It's sad, but that's how it happens typically.
Probably 90% of the 'Biker Mice' fandom was disappointed in the reboot. A small handful favor it, several tolerate, but the vast majority seem to downright loathe it. The fact that a magazine article in late 2012 anounced funding had been secured for a 'Biker Mice' feature film has a lot of fans holding their breath in a mixture of anticipation and terror, LOL.
You are speaking my language on the Vinnie and Charley thing in regards to the reboot series, though- if you did in fact glance through my gallery, I'm sure it was obvious I'm a huge VinniexCharley fan- it was practically devestating to me how much their relationship had been toned down in the reboot series to almost null, when their flirting and teasing of one another had been a huge aspect of the original series. The director/producer of the show has since made a few comments on this since, addressing that they were pretty much forced to tone it down ( won't somebody please think of the children!!!??? ) but that the franchise canon is is that beyond the 2006 reboot series, VInnie and Charley will actually be a couple togther on Mars. I take some solace in that, at least.
Yup, Disney currently owns the rights. They can't even release complete seasons of their own shows -_- so i have little faith.
I do remember Candy's old 'Biker Mice' art. I Just could have sworn she had some cat anthro characters that started out as Swat Kat fan OCs that she was uploading to Yerf for awhile there.. or I might be going crazy and mixing her up with another Candy... but I don't think so XD

It is awesome that you and your friends attended the same schools together and stuck with the same fandom. Most of my friends had never heard of the shows that I watched, they were more interested in Anime or were into the activities the other "cool" kids were interested in. It is one of the reasons why we never stayed friends after high school; we had little in common. I did had one or two friends who were into Dragon Ball Z though and we write fan fics together. Too bad my OC was a Mary Sue back then...she has moved onto other things like the Sherlock and Dr. Who fandoms. I don't really care about either shows although I'd rather stick with Sherlock Holmes. The Dr. Who fandom kind of scares me.
You're absolutely right. Deviantart seems to have everything that a fan could want. You get all kinds of fans on this site. The good, the bad, and the really ugly all rolled up into one, tight package. I'm not kidding about the ugly, either. You can't imagine how much drama I've seen over the past few years. And yet drama is still continuing in the fandoms I frequent.
I can recall back in the 90s people have to use mailing lists to communicate with each other. I've never been onto any of those mailing lists.
Speaking of Road Rovers, do you remember an artist by the name of...let me see...silabub? I know that there was quite a bit of drama over a fan stalking her or something?
There's a Biker Mice from Mars movie coming out? When was this announced? And if you think that is bad, how about a Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers movie? Wait a second, that just might work...
Yeah, I can tell that you are a quite fan of that couple. And I'm positive that is the reason why they tone down the relationship to begin with. Perhaps they found the sexual tension to be a little too risqué for children. I had a funny feeling that the couple is canon in the reboot. Still I wished they would've stuck with the adult humor. Sadly adult humor is the kind of thing that can piss the more...erm...."sensitive" parents out. Look what happen with the Lorax movie. Erm, you are not a Once-Ler fan are you?
Well, I could look through the way back machine and see if Candy did draw some SWAT Kats stuff, or I could ask her myself. I know she has a deviantart gallery somewhere.

Oh yes, with fandoms will always come drama. I've been around fandoms for almost 2 decades so I've definitely seen it all and more. And oh gosh, mailing lists and newsgroups... those really take me back!
By the way, A+ comment; I am Silabub. I took an 8 year hiatus from the Internet due to that whole mess and started uploading art again in 2010 under this new alias. It was a really ugly situation and two different police departments and an attorney had to become involved, but it's behind me now for better or worse. That's about all I'll say on that subject due to legal and privacy reasons, but I honestly had to laugh when you brought up that situation. I didn't do a very good job of changing my alias when I returned to the Internet- most people figured out who I was right away even though I had been MIA from 2002-2010 XD
I'd have to do some looking through my files again, but the BMFM movie was mentioned in a few places, including a well-known forum for animators working in the industry. IMDB also has a listing for it and has it listed as pre-production, but we'll see if anything comes of it. And I had heard of a 'Rescue Rangers' film as well XD
Oh yeah, the humor in the original 'Biker Mice' series was more adult and was full of innuendos and hilarious double-entendres, as well as some things I have to rewind to make sure I heard right ( 'my Sloppy Secondary' XD ) but then, a lot of shows in the early to mid-90s were a little more risque in their humor and weren't afraid to push sexual humor ( think of all the extremely buxom female characters alone in shows like 'Animaniacs' and 'Tiny Toons' that are used as gags for flustering the opposite sex. That kind of stuff you don't see in animated shows these days- it just wouldn't fly.
And yes, I'm a Once-ler fan ( I've got his DA stamp! ) but I'm not nearly as rabid as some of the creepier fangirls out there, LOL.
LOL- don't worry- I don't want you to have to bother Candy or something or go out of your way XD I was just musing over whether or not I was remembering correctly ^^ No biggie ^^

I didn't realize you were the silabub and I apologize if I brought up something personal. I can understand how painful, even stressful, the situation must've been. Even though I wasn't there when the situation happened, I couldn't help but feel worried about you. I'm not going to press you for any more information other then what you've just given me if it makes you uncomfortable. I just can't believe that the situation was really that bad.
You gotta love the 90s! I used to watch the Animaniacs all the time as well as Tiny Toons. I can still hear the Warners saying "hello nurse" and Dot singing how cute she is in my head. As for Tiny Toons, the one controversial episode I can remember I had seen numerous times. I think it is the one where Buster was drinking and driving? It was banned from what I heard. That's weird since I could've sworn I recorded the episode on tape.
Erm...maybe we should save this for notes? I think we are taking over Ty-Chou's coment box.

As for that 'Tiny Toons' episode, I don't recall ever hearing about it being banned ( most of the controversy around the show I can recall has to do with that one furry fan that was stalking Tress MacNeille, kinda fueling the demise of the show ) but I recently saw that episode in rerun maybe a month or so ago in rerun on the Hub network.
And certainly- if you are interested in continuing, I don't mind being noted ^^
